Monmouth College junior Alex Stuart
(Kirkwood, Ill./Yorkwood) and freshman Luke Reschke (Geneseo, Ill./Geneseo)
enjoyed the competition at last Saturday’s Wisconsin Twilight in
Madison, Wis., and were named this week’s Midwest Conference
Performers of the Week in men’s track and field.
Stuart, competing in the triple jump and javelin, had an outstanding
meet against some of the nation’s best. He won the javelin with a
throw of 187’5, just four inches off his career mark. He also
finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 47’3-1/2. His mark
in the javelin is tops in the Midwest Conference.
Reschke got ready for this weekend’s MWC meet by turning in the
league’s best time of 48.52 in the 400-meter dash, just .02 shy of
the NCAA national provisional-qualifying mark. Reschke also ran a
leg on the Fighting Scots’ first place 4x400 relay team, which
turned in an NCAA automatic-qualifying time of 3:13.03, good for
fourth place in the national rankings. One of the other team members
was his brother, junior Josh Reschke.
A physical education major, Stuart is the son of Stacy Dutton of
Kirkwood and Bryan Stuart of Monmouth.
A business major, Reschke is the son of Allan and Kathy Reschke of
Geneseo.
Monmouth College sophomore
outfielder Anna Coutts (Ladd, Ill./Spring Valley Hall) continued her
torrid hitting and was named this week’s Midwest Conference
Performer of the Week for softball.
Coutts hit .538 for the week, including a 4-for-4 performance in the
opening game of a twinbill at Knox as the Fighting Scots recorded a
pair of come-from-behind wins over the Prairie Fire. The Scots 16-6,
10-2 sweep of the Fire kept them alive in the race for the final MWC
playoff berth. She collected three hits in a doubleheader against
Illinois College while hitting in the number two spot in the order.
For the week, Coutts went 7-for-13 with four runs scored, a double,
triple and two RBI to raise her season average to .371.
A chemistry/education major, Coutts is the daughter of Robert and
Mary Coutts of Ladd.
Monmouth College junior Alex Stuart
(Kirkwood, Ill./Yorkwood) had a busy day at last Saturday’s Dick
Young Track and Field Classic in Grinnell, Iowa, and was named this
week’s Midwest Conference Performer of the Week honors in men’s
track and field.
Stuart, competing in the triple jump, long jump and javelin, had an
outstanding meet. He won the javelin with a career-best throw of
187’9, placed second in the triple jump (46’-8) and had a
career-best long jump of 21’10-1/2. His mark in the triple jump
places him eighth nationally and his javelin throw was just three
inches shy of the NCAA provisional-qualifying mark.
A physical education major, he is the son of Stacy Dutton of
Kirkwood and Bryan Stuart of Monmouth.
Monmouth College senior Albert
Greene (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) and junior Dante Daniels
(Waukegan, Ill./Gurnee-Warren) turned in NCAA provisional qualifying
marks at last Saturday’s Lee Calhoun Memorial meet in Macomb, and
picked up this week’s Midwest Conference Performer of the Week
honors in men’s track and field.
Greene took the MWC field event honor by breaking Monmouth’s
75-year-old triple jump record with a leap of 48’2-1/2. He also
soared 23’ in the long jump, the best outdoor mark of his career.
Greene is ranked second nationally in the triple jump and sixth in
the long jump.
Daniels continued his performance of a week ago, winning the
200-meter dash with a provisional qualifying time of 21.80. He also
ran a leg in the Fighting Scots’ 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relays. The
4x400 team turned in a provisional-qualifying time of 3:16.01, which
placed them sixth in the nation.
Monmouth College junior Jeff Denny
(Atlanta, Ill./Olympia) has played solid golf in his last three
rounds, and his most recent performance has earned him the Midwest
Conference Performer of the Week honor in men’s golf.
Denny posted a one-over-par 72 at last weekend’s Monmouth
Invitational. He finished second at the meet on his home course at
Gibson Woods. His round helped the Fighting Scots to a runner-up
finish with a season-low 299.
A business major, Denny is the son of Dale and Dawn Denny of
Atlanta.
Monmouth College junior Dante
Daniels (Waukegan, Ill./Gurnee) and freshman Shannon Turczyn (Peru,
Ill./LaSalle-Peru) had outstanding performances last Saturday’s
Wartburg Select meet in Waverly, Iowa, and picked up this week’s
Midwest Conference Performer of the Week honors in men’s and women’s
track and field. Both were honored for their performances in running
events.
Daniels logged an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 10.80 in the
100-meter dash as he won the event. He also picked up a second in
the 200-meter dash and was part of the 4x400 relay team that
finished second and the fourth-place 4x100 relay.
Turczyn nearly duplicated Daniels’ day by just missing a provisional
qualifying time in the 100-meter hurdles (15.09) to finish second.
She was 13th in the 200-meter dash. She also ran a leg on Monmouth’s
fourth-place 4x100 relay. Her hurdles time moved her to the top
ranking in the Midwest Conference.
Monmouth College freshman pitcher
Sarah Christensen (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) picked up three wins
at last week’s Midwest Classic and earned her first Midwest
Conference Pitcher of the Week honor.
Christensen went 4-0 on the week, beginning with a 3-2 win over
highly-touted Aurora University. In conference play, she picked up
two wins on the first day of the Midwest Classic defeating Beloit
9-2 and getting a 7-5 win in relief over Lawrence. The crafty
freshman then held off Ripon on Sunday to collect a 7-2 victory. For
the week, Christensen posted a 1.17 ERA with 14 strikeouts and two
walks in 24 innings of work.
Christensen shares the Pitcher of the Week honor with St. Norbert’s
Mara Resch.
An exploratory major, Christensen is the daughter of David and Becky
Christensen of Galesburg.
Monmouth College senior righthander
Dan Dunn (Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) is on a roll and picked up
his third Midwest Conference Pitcher of the Week honor this season.
Dunn allowed five hits and struck out five in a 3-2 win over
conference foe Illinois College last Saturday. He is 2-0 in
conference play, 5-2 overall, with an ERA of 2.70. His 46 strikeouts
and five wins lead the league. Opponents are hitting a meager .224
against Dunn this season.
A physical education major, Dunn is the son of Teri Dunn of Mapleton
and Dennis Dunn of Hanna City.
Monmouth College sophomores Zach
Wilson (Lacon, Ill./Midland) and Megan McKenna (Chicago,
Ill./Resurrection) left their marks at last Saturday’s Washington
University Invitational in St. Louis and picked up this week’s
Midwest Conference Performer of the Week honors in men’s and women’s
track and field. Both were honored for their performances in field
events.
Wilson posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the hammer
throw and took first with a school record of 169’10. He also won the
shot put with a 50’6-3/4 effort and was fourth in the discus.
McKenna placed second in the pole vault and brought home a pair of
third place finishes in the long jump and triple jump. Her pole
vault of 10’6 and triple jump mark of 34’7-1/2 are the best in the
Midwest Conference this season.
A biology major, Wilson is the son of James and Robin Wilson of
Lacon.
A business major, McKenna is the daughter of Debbie McKenna of
Chicago.
Monmouth College sophomore Matt Moser (Des Plaines, Ill./Maine West)
has been on a roll lately and was named the Midwest Conference
Performer of the Week honor in men’s tennis.
Moser posted a 3-0 singles record and 2-1 doubles mark last week
against Augustana College, Lawrence University and Loras College. He
currently owns a seven-match singles win streak and has helped the
Fighting Scots to a school record 15 dual meet victories.
A business major, Moser is the son of Michael and Monica Moser of
Des Plaines.
The Monmouth College baseball
team’s conference started off with a bang as senior pitcher Dan Dunn
(Mapleton, Ill./Illini Bluffs) tossed a no-hitter and sophomore
shortstop Ryan Priola (St. Charles, Ill./East) had a clutch
Saturday. The Fighting Scots pair earned the Midwest Conference
Pitcher and Performer of the Week honors, respectively.
Dunn picked up his second honor this season, firing an extra inning
no-hitter as the Scots downed Grinnell 2-1 in the opener of a
twinbill at Glasgow Field. The right-hander fanned nine and walked
one, allowing just one unearned run. Dunn began the game by hitting
the first batter, but settled in to toss the Scots’ second no-hitter
in the last two seasons. He improved to 4-2 on the year and lowered
his ERA to 2.72.
Priola made the most of his hits last week, driving in five runs
against Eureka with a pair of homers. Against Grinnell, he delivered
a two-run single in the nightcap to propel the Scots to a 3-1 win
and the sweep. He is hitting at a .352 clip this spring and his 19
RBI ranks him second in the conference.
A physical education major, Dunn is the son of Teri Dunn of Mapleton
and Dennis Dunn of Hanna City.
Priola, a business major, is the son of Joe and Lori Priola of St.
Charles.
Monmouth College freshman Kyle Korb
(Quincy, Ill./Quincy) helped the Fighting Scots to a 3-1 record last
week and earned his first Midwest Conference Performer of the Week
honor in men’s tennis.
Playing in Orlando, Fla., Korb posted a combined 7-1 match record.
Playing at No. 4 singles, he posted victories over Ferrum, Moravian,
Christopher Newport and Salve Regina.
Korb teamed with Kevin Kamenjarin at No. 2 doubles as the Scots
defeated Christopher Newport, the No. 9 ranked team in the Atlantic
South Region, 4-3. He has won six straight singles matches while the
Scots have equaled their highest win total (9) in school history.
A business major, Korb is the son of Gerald and Loree Korb of
Quincy.
When a Fighting Scot athlete achieves
a lifetime best in a track and field competition, they’ve had a meet
to remember. When they achieve lifetime bests in multiple events,
they earn the Performer of the Week honor from the Midwest
Conference.
Sophomores Zach Wilson (Lacon, Ill./Midland) and Megan McKenna
(Chicago, Ill./Resurrection) accomplished that feat at last
weekend’s Karl Schlender Invitational in Whitewater, Wis., earning
league honors for men’s and women’s field events, respectively.
Wilson uncorked the best shot put (50’6) and weight throw
(53’10-1/4) of his career, moving past teammate Jeff Rebholz into
first place in the league in both events as the Fighting Scots
prepare to host to the Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field
Championships this Friday and Saturday.
McKenna went one better, setting new personal bests in all three of
her field events. She long jumped 17’5-3/4, cleared 10’6-1/4 in the
pole vault and recorded a triple jump of 34’4. McKenna is now ranked
second in the MWC in all three events.
“They’re both very consistent in their approach to practice,” said
Monmouth track coach Roger Haynes. “They prepare themselves well for
competition. Megan is a very dynamic part of our track team in terms
of her good attitude and effort. Zach just gets a lot out of what he
does and what he’s told when he asks questions.”
A sophomore biology major, Wilson
is the son of James and Robin Wilson of Lacon, Ill.
A sophomore business major, McKenna
is the daughter of Debbie McKenna of Chicago, Ill.
They didn’t produce victories, but the
accomplishments of Monmouth’s Albert Greene and Kel Bond at last
week’s UNI-Dome Open were major nonetheless.
Both posted marks that put them in the top 10 in the nation in their
respective events, and they set school records in the process. Their
efforts also earned them the Midwest Conference Performer of the
Week honor for men’s field and track events, respectively.
Bond found the 800-meter race conditions very suitable, as he and
top-flight runner David Rotich of Iowa State University broke away
from the pack. Bond couldn’t catch Rotich, who had recently run a
4:04 mile, but he did take second in 1:53.80, breaking his
two-year-old record of 1:54.43.
The ink had barely dried on Greene’s triple jump mark from Feb. 11
when he went three inches further en route to his second-place
finish at the UNI-Dome Open, which was held on the campus of the
University of Northern Iowa. Only a competitor from Drake topped
Greene’s new school record of 46’3-1/4.

Monmouth College sophomore Brandon
Stacey (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) helped the Fighting Scots to a
2-1 record last week and earned his first Midwest Conference
Performer of the Week honor in men’s tennis.
Stacey was a combined 5-1 as Monmouth played three matches in less
that 24 hours last weekend. He finished with a 2-1 record at No. 1
singles and teamed with Jared Kunkle to complete the week 3-0 at No.
1 doubles. The Scots played Central, Illinois Wesleyan and Wheaton
and lost only to Wheaton, improving to 3-4 on the year.
A sophomore exploratory major, Stacey is the son of Greg and Dana
Stacey of Galesburg.
Monmouth College men’s pole vaulter
Peter Sprecher (Canton, Ill./Canton) had the best performance of his
career at last Saturday’s Fighting Scot Invitational at Monmouth and
that performance landed the sophomore his first Midwest Conference
Performer of the Week honor in men’s indoor track and field.
Sprecher, named the field Performer of the Week, cleared the pole
vault at 16’ to take second in the event. The sophomore’s effort has
provisionally qualified him for the NCAA national meet in March and
the mark ties him for the 11th-best vault in the nation this season.
His previous best of 15’3” was set two weeks ago. Only All-American
Keenan King has a higher vault in the history of Fighting Scots
indoor track and field.
An exploratory major, Sprecher is the son of Rod and Jean Sprecher
of Canton.
Monmouth College senior guard Courtney Scherrer (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah)
helped the Fighting Scots to an historic win and set the school
record for career assists as Monmouth completed a 2-0 week, earning
Scherrer the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week honor in
women’s basketball.
Scherrer’s week included dishing out eight assists in a 62-50 win
over Knox to set the new mark for career assists (332) at Monmouth.
Playing her last home game at Glennie Gym, the senior led the Scots
to a 65-63 win over Lake Forest, Monmouth’s first win over the
Foresters in 22 years. In the two games, Scherrer totaled 15 points,
11 assists, six rebounds and two steals while going a perfect
11-of-11 at the free throw line. With one game to play, she is just
two assists away from setting the Fighting Scots single-season
assist total.
An education major, Scherrer is the daughter of Steve and Carolyn
Scherrer of Roscoe.
Monmouth College’s Megan McKenna (Chicago, Ill./Resurrection)
left her mark at last Saturday’s Tiger Indoor Invitational at DePauw
University and picked up her first Midwest Conference Performer of
the Week honor in women’s indoor track and field.
McKenna, named the field Performer of the Week, cleared the pole
vault at 9’6-1/4 and soared 16’8-3/4 in the long jump. The
sophomore’s third place finish in both events helped the Fighting
Scots’ women to a third place finish in the 15-team field. Her long
jump moved her to ninth all-time on the Monmouth honor roll. McKenna
also took seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 32’8-1/4.
A business major, McKenna is the daughter of Debbie McKenna of
Chicago.
Monmouth College men’s pole vaulter
Johnny Henkins (Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) had an outstanding
performance at last Saturday’s Midwest Invitational at Monmouth and
landed his first Midwest Conference Performer of the Week honor in
men’s indoor track and field.
Henkins, named the field Performer of the Week, cleared the pole
vault at 15’9” to win the event by more than a foot. The sophomore’s
effort has provisionally qualified him for the NCAA national meet in
March and the mark ties him for the sixth-best vault in the nation
this season.
Only All-American Keenan King has a
higher vault in the history of Fighting Scots indoor track and
field.
A business major, Henkins is the son of Paul and Becky Henkins of
Kewanee.
Monmouth College sophomore center
Ashley Yeast (Sciota, Ill./West Prairie) helped the Fighting Scots
to a 2-1 week and landed her first Midwest Conference Performer of
the Week honor in women’s basketball.
Yeast’s week included a 13-point, 15-rebound effort in a 58-54 win
over Illinois College. The 6-1 sophomore followed up with a
17-point, 14-rebound night in a 66-63 win over league-leading
Lawrence University. In a week-ending 54-52 loss to St. Norbert,
Yeast pulled down 15 rebounds while scoring nine points. She also
added six steals, three blocks and two assists in the three games.
For the week, the sophomore averaged 13 points and 14.6 rebounds.
Yeast leads the MWC in rebounds (11.8 rpg) and in double-doubles
(11).
An accounting/physical education major, Yeast is the daughter of
Stephen and Judy Yeast of Sciota.
Monmouth College senior guard Chris Hebeler (Fulton,
Ill./Fulton) got the Fighting Scots back on the winning track last
week, and in the process he set a new school record and captured his
first Midwest Conference Performer of the Week honor in men’s
basketball.
Hebeler set the Monmouth record for three-pointers in a game when he
drained 12-of-17 long range shots in an 87-80 win over Aurora
University last week. The senior’s long range bombs also contributed
to the team record of 20 three-pointers in a game.
On two separate
occasions, Hebeler hit five treys in succession. In 33 minutes of
action, he also pulled down four defensive rebounds, added three
assists and one steal while committing only one turnover from his
point guard position. His 38 points for the contest ranks him eighth
all-time on the Scots honor roll for points in a game.
A biopsychology major, Hebeler is the son of Ron and Pam Hebeler of
Fulton.
A pair of Monmouth College freshman
swimmers have been named Midwest Conference Performers of the Week.
Andrew Wilson (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) and Jenny Lewis
(Rensselaer, Ind./Central) each set school records during last
weekend’s DePauw Invitational and were rewarded with their first MWC
Performer of the Week honors.
Wilson set six school records at the 11-team meet. He won the
200-yard breaststroke with a school record time of 2:14.51 and
finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke. His preliminary time of
1:01.40 in the breaststroke was also a school record. He also swam a
leg on the 200- and 400-yard medley and 200- and 400-yard freestyle
relays to set school records in all four events.
Lewis has her name on five more school records following the DePauw
meet. Her preliminary time in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.01) set
a school record and her 200-yard backstroke time of 2:17.16 set the
new school mark in that event. She finished third and fourth in
those events, respectively. Lewis set another record with a time of
2:03.98 in the 200-yard freestyle and was part of team records in
the 200- yard medley and freestyle relays.
Monmouth College sophomore forward
Trevor Neff (Morris, Ill./Coal City) led the Fighting Scots to a
season-ending victory over arch-rival Knox Saturday and was rewarded
for his efforts with the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week
honor in men’s soccer.
Neff, who picked up his first Performer of the Week honor, scored
the game-winning goals in the Fighting Scots’ final two games.
Against Illinois College, Neff tallied the match’s first goal in the
47th minute and added another just 12 minutes later. In the season
finale, he collected the game-winner just six minutes into the
match.
Neff led the team in goals (6) and shared the lead in points (12) as
the, who finished 6-7-3, Scots tripled their win total from last
season.
A history major, he is the son of Peter and Patricia Neff of Morris.
A stellar weekend has earned
Monmouth College’s Kristin Mertel (Palatine, Ill./Hoffman Estates)
her first Midwest Conference Defensive Performer of the Week honor
in women’s soccer this season.
Mertel, a junior defender, led the Fighting Scots defensive unit to
another strong showing over the weekend. The Scots allowed just one
goal in two conference wins to earn a number three seed in their
first-ever appearance in the league tournament.
Four shutouts in the last six games have given Monmouth a
league-best six-game winning streak.
The Fighting Scots will open the conference tournament in Grinnell,
Iowa, Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Carroll College.
For the second time this season, the Midwest Conference has honored
Monmouth College quarterback Mitch Tanney (Lexington,
Ill./Lexington) with the league’s Offensive Performer of the Week
honor in football.
The senior was honored for his outstanding play in last weekend’s
45-0 win over Illinois College.
Tanney, who entered the game as the passing efficiency leader in
Division III, turned the tables and rushed for a 33-yard touchdown
before passing for three TDs and 212 yards. His 22-of-28 passing day
improved his season efficiency rating to 187.27.
The Fighting Scots currently hold a 15-game winning streak with two
regular season games to play and lead the conference with a 7-0
record.
It’s a twin killing of sorts for
the Monmouth College women’s soccer team. Twins Abby and Amy Horneck
have been honored as the Midwest Conference Women’s Soccer
Performers of the Week for defense and offense, respectively.
Abby, a senior sweeper, shined defensively last week, leading the
Scots’ defense to three shutouts. In one of those shutouts, she held
Lake Forest’s career scoring leader to just one shot on goal. The
Foresters had been unbeaten in league play since the middle of the
2003 season. The Scots defense allowed only nine shots on goal
during the three-game stretch.
While Abby’s play was crucial in the Scots’ stifling defense, her
sister Amy was scoring at the other end of the field. The senior
forward scored four goals and had three assists in the three games,
and in the process, became the career assist leader at Monmouth. Amy
is the league scoring leader with 16 goals.
With two regular season games left, Monmouth is on the brink of
qualifying for its first-ever appearance in the league playoffs, and
their nine wins is a school record.
The Hornecks are the daughters of Don and Vicki Horneck of
Hermiston.
Monmouth College’s Justin Zigler (Tampico,
Ill./Prophetstown) can add another honor to his trophy case.
Earlier this season, the Fighting Scots linebacker set the school
record for tackles, and this week he has been named the Midwest
Conference Defensive Performer of the week.
Zigler kickstarted the Scots’ offense Saturday with a 30-yard
interception return for Monmouth’s first score in a 34-0 win over
Lake Forest. The senior also added 10 tackles, three tackles for
loss, a sack, a fumble recovery and a pass defended as Monmouth
remained unbeaten on the year at 5-0. Monmouth leads the Midwest
Conference with five games to play.
A physical education major, Zigler is the son of Steve and Brenda
Zigler of Tampico.
A four goal outburst has landed
Monmouth College’s Amy Horneck (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston) the
latest Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the Week honor in
women’s soccer.
Horneck, a senior forward, had her 16-match scoring streak stopped
last week, but started another with four goals in the first half of
the Fighting Scots’ 8-1 win over Ripon last weekend. She netted the
game winner just 15 seconds into the match and currently leads the
league with 25 points.
A chemistry major, she is the daughter of Don and Vicki Horneck of
Hermiston.
Monmouth College freshman Cassie
Frantz (Macomb, Ill./Macomb) is raising a racket within the Midwest
Conference tennis competition, literally.
Frantz went undefeated at No. 3 singles for the Fighting Scots last
week in league play and was rewarded with her first Midwest
Conference Performer of the Week honor.
Frantz defeated opponents from Knox, St. Norbert and Beloit in
straight sets and then teamed with sophomore Shauna Skowronski to
post a victory over Knox in No.1 doubles competition.
A math major, she is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. Kerry Frantz
of Macomb.
Monmouth College sophomore
midfielder Paul Kallal (Jerseyville, Ill./Jersey) led the Fighting
Scots to a come-from-behind win over Grinnell College Sunday and was
rewarded for his efforts with the Midwest Conference Co-Performer of
the Week honor in men’s soccer.
Kallal, who had started the season as a defender, made coach Rue
Carthew’s decision to move him to midfield pay big dividends as he
scored his first collegiate goal off a header early in the second
half to put the Fighting Scots on the board. He then notched the
game winner on a free kick with just over seven minutes to play.
Kallal, who shares the honor with Chris Johnson of Beloit, picked up
his first MWC Performer of the Week honor.
A history major, he is the son of Patricia Kallal of Jerseyville.
Monmouth College freshman defensive
lineman Anthony Goranson (Poplar Grove, Ill./Belvidere) was named to
the 22-man “Team of the Week” by D3football.com for his performance
in the Fighting Scots’ landmark 28-20 victory at St. Norbert College
last Saturday.
The Scots have been denied Midwest Conference titles in three of the
past four seasons thanks to six-time defending champ St. Norbert
but, with Goranson’s help, Monmouth turned the tide this year.
Goranson was in on seven tackles, and six of them were for loss,
pushing the Green Knights backward a total of 30 yards. None was
bigger than his tackle in the backfield of Casey Meehan on SNC’s
final drive of the game. He added three sacks on the day for minus
23 yards.
Goranson was joined on the Team of the Week by another MWC player,
Beloit running back Lee Rankinen, who gained 246 yards against Lake
Forest. Goranson and Rankinen will meet this weekend at Monmouth’s
Bobby Woll Memorial Field as the Scots host the Bucs at 1:30 p.m.
It’s three in a
row for the Monmouth College football team.
Junior wide receiver Evan Haffner (Canton, Ill./Canton) has been
named the Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the Week,
marking the third straight week a member of the Fighting Scots has
received the POW honor from the league office.
Haffner helped the Fighting Scots to a 28-20 victory over six-time
defending MWC champion St. Norbert last weekend in Wisconsin. His 16
receptions shattered the previous mark of 12 set by Terry Schneider
in 1968, and his 190 receiving yards, which included a 72 yard TD
reception, is fourth best all-time.
Haffner also added 58 kick return yards, 28 punt return yards and
eight yards rushing. His 284 all-purpose yards put him second in
that category.
The win was Monmouth’s first over St. Norbert since 1996 and puts
them in position to control their own destiny for the league title
and the automatic NCAA playoff berth that goes with it.
An education/physical education major, Haffner is the son of Gerald
and Sharon Haffner of Canton.
For the second straight week, the Monmouth College football team has
had a player honored by the Midwest Conference.
Senior quarterback Mitch Tanney (Lexington, Ill./Lexington) was
named Midwest Conference Offensive Performer of the Week for his
outstanding play in last weekend’s 48-34 win over Ripon.
Tanney threw for four touchdowns, completing 17-of-25 passes without
an interception during the Scots’ conference opening win. The Scots
exploded to a 48-0 lead before Ripon put on a fourth-quarter surge.
Tanney led the Scots to a record 34-point second quarter as Monmouth
held a 41-0 advantage at halftime. He amassed 259 passing yards
while improving his pass efficiency rating to 190.86.
The Scots travel to DePere, Wis., Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. date with
defending MWC champion St. Norbert. Monmouth hopes to avenge the
only blemish on last year’s 9-1 record.
Monmouth College senior outside hitter
Karissa Murray (Hometown, Ill./Oak Lawn) led the Fighting Scots to a
4-0 week and earned the season’s first Midwest Conference Performer
of the Week honor in volleyball.
Murray was a dominant force in the Fighting Scots four wins. Her 52
kills, 3.47 kills per game average and .257 attack percentage led
the Scots in each category. In addition, Murray finished the week by
being named to the Monmouth College Invitational all-tournament
team.
An education major, Murray is the daughter of Wendy Murray of
Hometown.
A pair of record-setting
accomplishments has resulted in Midwest Conference Performer of the
Week honors for two Monmouth College football players.
Senior linebacker Justin Zigler (Prophetstown, Ill./Prophetstown)
and sophomore kicker/punter Nathan Palkovic (Peoria, Ill./Woodruff)
each set school records in a 40-26 season-opening win over Concordia
(Wis.) and picked up the MWC Defensive Performer of the Week and
Special Team Performer of the Week honor, respectively.
Zigler’s 15 total tackles (7 solos, 8 assists) eclipsed the old
career tackle record of 259 set by Justin Orertle. In reaching the
new high water mark, Zigler also forced and recovered a fumble and
made two tackles for loss.
Palkovic proved his 58 yard field goal in practice was no fluke when
he nailed a school-record 45 yarder to give the Scots a 40-6 lead in
the fourth quarter. He also had a 26-yard field goal in the second
quarter and finished the day 4-of-5 on PATs. The sophomore had a
good day punting, too, averaging 39.8 yards.
