MC Claims 16 All-Conference Athletes In Spring Sports

Release Date:  June 2, 1999

Sixteen student-athletes from four varsity teams were recently named to their respective All-Midwest Conference teams as Monmouth College finished its spring sports seasons. Monmouth, an NCAA Division III college located in Monmouth, Illinois, is a member of the Midwest Athletic Conference (MWC). The Fighting Scots had athletes recognized for outstanding achievement in men's and women's outdoor track and field, men's baseball and women's softball.

Men's Outdoor Track & Field
Monmouth finished third in the men’s division at the 1999 MWC Outdoor Track and Field Meet and had one individual champion. The winners in each event are declared All-Conference performers in track and field. Freshman Scott Stanton (Monmouth,IL) won the 110-meter high hurdle title outdoors in a time of 15.31 seconds after winning the 55-meter event indoors in March.

Women's Outdoor Track & Field
The Monmouth women's track team also finished third at the 1999 MWC Meet, claiming three individual champions and one relay title. Senior Amanda Colgan (Galva,IL) earned her first Midwest Conference track title, winning the javelin throw with an NCAA provisional performance of 128'7". Freshman Jaime Jones (LaHarpe, IL) cleared 5'2" to complete an indoor-outdoor sweep in the high jump and sophomore Maggie Semington (Galesburg,IL) won her first individual MWC crown by running to victory in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (1:06.13). Semington teamed with seniors Christy Keller (Crystal Lake,IL) and Sherri Polk (St. Louis, MO) and sophomore Elise Estes (Colorado Springs,CO) to capture the 4x400 relay event in a season-best time of 4:07.88.

Men's Baseball
Despite not making the postseason tournament, the Fighting Scots earned five First Team All-Conference selections in baseball and one Honorable Mention pick. Monmouth, which finished the season at 15-16, ended with a league mark of 5-7 and finished in third place in the MWC South Division. The Scots were represented in field positions on the divisional All-Conference team by senior outfielder Andy Kahlenberg (St. Charles,IL), junior second baseman Matt Carlson (Frankfort,IL) and sophomore shortstop Casey Boydstun (Galesburg,IL). Two freshmen made the First Team list, pitcher Ryan Johnson (Ottumwa,IA) and utility player Joe Larkins (Galesburg,IL). Junior Jake Bilyeu (Mokena,IL) was one of two Honorable Mention pitchers.

Women's Softball
After surprising the league coaches by finishing second at the MWC postseason tournament, the Monmouth women's softball team placed three seniors on the South Division All-Conference Team. The Scots ended the season at 15-19 overall and 5-3 within the division. Shortstop Heather Downing (Fairview,IL) earned her third All-MWC selection and Monmouth’s starting battery combination of pitcher Sherilyn Daniels (Geneseo,IL) and catcher Beth Stannke (Coal Valley,IL) also earned all-league recognition.
