Plummer and Purlee made their names at Monmouth in football, although both participated in other sports. Fox was a two-sport star for the Lady Scots, earning all-conference honors in both volleyball and softball. Plummer was a key component of the last undefeated gridiron team for Monmouth, the 1972 Fighting Scots squad that finished with a 9-0 record. The Scots won the Midwest Conference that season and also were champions in 1971 with an 8-1 overall mark. The titles were the first for Monmouth in 37 years. Plummer, a running back, was the MVP of the ’72 team, a squad many consider to be the best the college has ever put on the field. He set a season record of 6.5 yards per carry that fall which still stands. He is also the career-leader in that department with a 6.4 yard-per-carry average. The Muscatine, Iowa, prep star is also in the record books for his 97-yard run against Beloit in 1971, breaking Bobby Woll’s 1933 mark of 87 yards. He finished his career with 1,742 rushing yards. Purlee, who prepped at nearby Roseville, was one of the most prolific passers in Fighting Scot history, throwing for over 1,200 yards in each of his final two seasons. He earned honorable mention All-American honors as a quarterback in 1975. That season he had a 24-completion day against St. Norbert, which is still a Scot record. The Purlee-led Scots shared the MWC title the next season as the quarterback finished his career with 27 touchdown passes and 2,656 yards. Besides football, Purlee also competed on two Terry Glasgow-coached teams, playing on the basketball squad and serving as a catcher on the baseball team. He earned a total of 11 varsity letters and was the McClintock Memorial award winner his senior year. Fox pitched her way into the MC record books in softball, recording 36 wins in her four-year career and leading the Lady Scots to the MWC title in 1987. No one struck out more batters (201), had more shutouts (11) or had a higher winning percentage (.621) than the former Hamilton High School star. She finished her career with a 1.75 ERA, which is the second-best mark in school history. On the volleyball courts, Fox was picked to the All-MWC team her sophomore and senior seasons as an outside hitter. The team was 63-32 in her four years on campus. |
