Women's 4 x 400 Sets School Record
Release Date: May 3, 2000
For most folks, running a four-minute mile is a great goal, but a nearly-impossibly
task. The task becomes a little easier when it’s divided into four equal parts, and
Monmouth College’s 4x400 relay squad broke both the four-minute barrier and the Fighting
Scots record at the Drake Relays Friday.
Constance Jackson, Jill Hoops, Kara
Kuhrts and Philicia Moredock completed four laps around the track in Des
Moines, Iowa, in 3:55.35, breaking the existing mark of 3:57.70 set by Heather Furrow,
Stephanie Owen, Christy Keller and Dori Ternig in 1996. The time was a
provisional-qualifier for this month’s Division III national meet, and coach Roger
Haynes feels the women have a shot at the automatic-qualifying time of 3:53.9.
While that was the only significant result from the
Drake Relays, the men and women were in action at the Loras Open in Dubuque, Iowa,
Saturday, and Jackson, Hoops and Moredock were at it again, trimming their PQ-time in
the 4x100 to 49.07 along with Elise Estes.
That effort was good for one of six Monmouth wins on
the day. Jackson added a victory in the 100-meter dash (12.65) and Justin Bryant
won the 200-meter dash (22.21) and the 400-meter dash (49.02). Cort Mills high
jumped 6’8 and the men’s 4x100 broke the tape in 42.55.
The rest of the top finishes for the men included: the
A 4x400 relay, second in 3:19:06; Will Smith and David Hodge, tied for
second in the triple jump (43’5); Eric Holmes, third in the shot put (49’8);
Randy Williams, fourth in the 400-meter dash (50.35); Amon Shelby and
James Amerison, fourth and fifth in the 100-meter dash (11.43 and 11.44); Matt
Beverly, fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.72) and eighth in the 100-meter dash
(11.36); Scott Stanton, sixth in the 110-meter hurdles (15.05); Tony Miles,
eighth in the steeplechase (9:58.48); and the B 4x400 relay, eighth in 3:28.83.

(1:05.34); Jackson, third in the long jump (17’3); Moredock, third in the 200-meter dash
(26.76) and eighth in the long jump (14’9); Melissa Jones, third in the high jump
