Scots Basketball Lands Moline's Spranger
Release Date: July 27, 2000
Kenny Spranger, a key component
of the Moline Maroons’ Sweet 16 team in 1997-98, will attend Monmouth College this fall
and compete on the Fighting Scots basketball team.
Spranger, whose Maroons lost 60-48 in
the super-sectional that year to eventual state runner-up Galesburg, said it was his
relationship with former Silver Streak Steve Glasgow, who’s now a starting guard for the
Scots, which helped influence his decision.
"I’ve known Steve and his father
since I was in high school," said Spranger, who played the last two seasons at Black
Hawk College, averaging 20 points per game as a sophomore. "I respect Steve a lot as a
player and from what I’ve heard, his father is a pretty good coach."
The elder Glasgow, Terry, has
compiled a record of 406-222 at Monmouth, making him the 16th-winningest active coach in
Division III basketball. He said of Spranger, "I’ve always been impressed with Kenny’s
career while he was at Moline. Steve said he was one of the toughest kids to play
against because he let his play do the talking."
The 6-foot-3 Spranger, who reached
the final 64 of the Country Companies Class AA Three-Point Shootout as a senior and was
eliminated despite hitting 9-of-15 treys, characterizes himself as a player who can
handle the "2 or 3 position." The three-point threat has also been working to improve
his inside game.
"I thought Monmouth had a pretty nice
campus, and the people were really nice there," Spranger added. "I’d like to pursue a
career in business, and Monmouth College has a good program."
"Kenny is a fine young man, and he
has his priorities in order," concluded Glasgow. "Obviously, I’m quite pleased with his
decision. He’s a fine student and a very good basketball player." |
