Froebe named 1st Team All-Conference, Stenoish
selected 2nd Team, Glasgow receives Honorable Mention
Release Date:
March 8, 2000
Led by Kent Froebe’s selection to the first team, three Monmouth College men’s
basketball players were honored by the Midwest Conference, the league announced Tuesday.
Froebe was the lone senior on the first team.
Player of the Year Adam LaVoy of Lawrence, who led the
league in scoring at 22.7 points per game, joined Froebe on the first team, and the rest
of the unit included rebound-leader J.R. Jurecko of Lake Forest, Will Davis of Carroll
and assist-leader Steve Kohl of Ripon. Lake Forest went a perfect 16-0 to win the
regular-season title, earning Chris Conger the Coach of the Year honor, but it was Ripon
who captured the postseason tourney and the automatic NCAA berth.
Monmouth’s Jeff Stenoish was selected to the
second team and Steve Glasgow was named honorable mention. It was Glasgow’s
second straight honorable mention honor. Other second-teamers were Henry Grant of
Beloit, Brian Bruha of Lake Forest, Josh Glocke of Ripon and the lone senior, Kevin
Geraghty of Knox. Glasgow was joined in the honorable mention category by Lake Forest’s
Fred Bell, Lawrence’s Nate Leverence, Beloit’s Jason Hanson, Knox’s Steve Cottrell,
Ripon’s Jeff Massen, Illinois College’s Matt Espenscheid and St. Norbert’s Chris Zais.
Froebe was named to the first team after being picked
to the second team and honorable mention units, respectively, the past two seasons.
Froebe ranked third in the league in scoring (19.1), third in free throw percentage
(86.9), seventh in field goal percentage (57.6), 12th in assists (2.8) and second in
rebounds (8.1).
A late-season flurry saw Froebe push his career point
total to 975, just shy of the coveted 1,000-point plateau. One mark he did reach was the
single-season free throw accuracy record. Counting all games, Froebe was 118-of-134
(88.1 percent), breaking the old mark of 87.9 set by Pete Kovacs in 1955. Froebe’s
all-game season averages were 16.7 points and 7.6 rebounds.
The 22-game averages for the sophomore duo of Stenoish
and Glasgow were 16.6 points and 12.2 points, respectively. Stenoish was one shy of the
team lead in steals, and Glasgow was the No. 1 assist-man at 64. Stenoish’s 18.0 ppg in
MWC action ranked sixth.
Stenoish is definitely a contender for the career free
throw accuracy record of 83.9, set by Mark Mendez from 1981-83. After his first two
seasons Stenoish is at 78.9.
Although Froebe just missed the 1,000-point level,
Stenoish and Glasgow are all on pace to hit the milestone at the halfway points of their
careers. Stenoish has 598 points, Glasgow has scored 578. |
