Appropriately enough, the 400th victory of Terry
Glasgow’s Division III basketball career at Monmouth College involved a key coaching
decision.
In a home game against Grinnell College – which entered
the contest as the highest scoring school in the nation – Glasgow elected to hold onto
the ball on each possession for 20-25 seconds before setting his offense in motion. The
move was designed to draw Grinnell out of a zone defense, but when the Pioneers didn’t
budge, neither did Glasgow’s troops.
As a result, the Pioneers never did find an offensive
flow in Monmouth’s 63-60 victory that saw Grinnell score 56.7 points under their
average.
The victory ran Glasgow’s record at Monmouth to 400-214
(.651) in his 28th year of collegiate coaching, all with the Fighting Scots. Glasgow,
who has guided the Scots to four of their seven Midwest Conference championships and has
finished below .500 only three times, is 15th on the list of victories for active
Division III coaches.
For several years, Glasgow also coached baseball at
Monmouth, sporting a record of 343-166-3 (.673). In all, Glasgow has a 743-380-3 record
(.659) in his varsity coaching career with the Fighting Scots.
"It means I’ve been coaching a long time and coached a
lot of good players," Glasgow told reporters following the game. "It’s nice to get 400,
but I feel better about win No. 3 of the season, especially after we let one get away on
Friday against a very good Lake Forest team (which beat Monmouth 86-79)."
The weekend split left Monmouth with a 3-5 overall
record and a 1-2 mark in the Midwest Conference. The Scots play a non-conference road
game at Aurora University Tuesday night before returning to Glennie Gymnasium for MWC
games with Ripon and St. Norbert Friday and Saturday. |
