Shawn Hickey Named MWC Player of the Week
Release Date: April 6, 2000
In compiling a 15-game hitting streak this season,
Shawn Hickey, a Monmouth College
senior from Galesburg, Ill., has delivered many key blows in the Fighting Scots’ attack.
None, however, was bigger than his last one, a two-out single to right field in the
bottom of the eighth inning that knocked in the go-ahead run in MC’s 8-7 victory Sunday
over Wisconsin Lutheran. The win completed a three-game sweep at Monmouth’s brand new
Glasgow Field in Peacock Memorial Athletic Park.
Not only did the single allow Hickey
to extend his streak, but it also clinched his honor as the Midwest Conference’s South
Division Player of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Voters for the initial POW honor of
the year took into account all games played by MWC squads this spring, and Hickey’s
numbers rate high on the charts. The infielder is hitting .460 and has an on-base
percentage of .481. Both are team-highs and have helped the Scots to an 11-6 record.
Only St. Norbert (9-4) has a better mark so far this year.
Hickey was also honored on campus
recently, as he was chosen to be the student speaker at one of two dedications later
this month at Peacock Park and Glasgow Field. Hickey, along with President Richard
Giese, athletic director Terry Glasgow and friend of the college Don Fike, will speak at
the 11 a.m. dedication of Glasgow Field on April 29 prior to a 1 p.m. doubleheader with
Knox.
On April 14, Peacock Park will be
dedicated at a ceremony at 5 p.m. Speakers will again include President Giese and
Glasgow, as well as Safford Peacock and Monmouth College women’s soccer player Heather
McDonald. |
