David Hodge, a sophomore from Galesburg,
eclipsed a nine-year-old Monmouth College record in the triple jump at the Iowa State
Open indoor track meet in Ames, Iowa, over the weekend.
Hodge’s mark of 45’11 3/4 broke Todd Stevens’ 1991
Fighting Scot record and was over two feet further than his previous career-best.
Despite the record, Hodge only finished in a tie for ninth in the event, as Monmouth was
competing against several Division I and II schools.
The Scots’ other high finisher was Cort Mills, a junior
from Little York, who cleared 6’5 in the high jump to tie for seventh. The winning mark
of 7’4 1/2 equaled a meet record.
This weekend, Monmouth will be competing in a five-team
meet hosted by Knox College that will also include Loras, Washington University and
Augustana.
Hickey was also honored on campus recently, as he was
chosen to be the student speaker at one of two dedications later this month at Peacock
Park and Glasgow Field. Hickey, along with President Richard Giese, athletic director
Terry Glasgow and friend of the college Don Fike, will speak at the 11 a.m. dedication
of Glasgow Field on April 29 prior to a 1 p.m. doubleheader with Knox.
On April 14, Peacock Park will be dedicated at a
ceremony at 5 p.m. Speakers will again include President Giese and Glasgow, as well as
Safford Peacock and Monmouth College women’s soccer player Heather McDonald. |
