Jackson Qualifies for Track
Nationals
Release Date: April 11, 2000
Monmouth College’s Constance Jackson
secured an automatic berth at this year’s Division III National Outdoor Track and Field
Championships, running a third-place time of 24.95 in the 200-meter dash Saturday at a
meet hosted by Washington University in St. Louis.
On the men’s side, Scott Stanton did the next
best thing, besting the provisional time in the 110-meter high hurdles. He was clocked
in 14.82 as he won the race. Should Stanton’s time hold up as a national-qualifying
mark, it would be his first appearance at the outdoor nationals. In March, he placed
eighth in the nation in the indoor 55-meter hurdles. Stanton added a fourth-place finish
Saturday in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles (56.06), accounting for 15 of Monmouth’s
55 points.
As a team, the men placed fifth out of 17 squads, while
the women were eighth of 20.
Jackson, a junior, will be making her second appearance
in three years at the national meet, which will be held May 25-27 in Naperville, Ill. As
a freshman, she qualified individually in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and in the
4x100. Her 200 time was just .09 shy of Stacy Brown’s school record set in 1998. Jackson
added a second-place finish Saturday in the long jump (17’ 2-3/4") and a sixth in the
100-meter dash (12.42).
Two other entries just missed provisional marks. The
women’s 4x100 squad of Jackson, Philicia Moredock, Elise Estes and Jill Hoops
took second, with their time of 49.69 falling just four-tenths of a second shy. Hoops
missed the provisional mark in the 400-meter hurdles by six-hundredths of a second as
she ran a second-place time of 1:05.03.
Other point-scorers for Monmouth included: Eric
Holmes, first in the shot put, 49’ 4-1/4"; Aaron Walker, second in the pole
vault, 14’ 8-1/4"; the second-place women’s 4x400 squad, 4:02.73; Chris Lacy,
third in the 400-meter dash, 50.95; the fourth-place men’s 4x100 squad, 43.31;
Melissa Jones, fourth in the high jump, 5’ 2-1/2"; Cort Mills, fourth in the
high jump, 6’ 4-3/4"; Kara Kuhrts, fifth in the triple jump, 34’ 3/4"; Moredock,
sixth in the 400, 59.97; Mills, sixth in the javelin, 154’ 7"; Tobias Dickerson,
seventh in the shot put, 44’ 3"; and Will Smith, eighth in the triple jump, 42’
3-1/4."
