Scots Lauded for Successful Season

The highest win total since 1989 has led to numerous awards for the Monmouth College football team.  As a result of their 8-2 season, the Fighting Scots landed 13 players on the All-Midwest Conference team and their head coach was named MWC Coach of the Year in a vote of the league’s coaches.

The Scots, who were 3-7 a year ago, finished the conference season in third place, with their only losses coming to MWC co-champs St. Norbert and Ripon.

Head coach Steve Bell was selected as MWC Coach of the Year. The Fighting Scots led the league in turnover margin (+16);  were second in points allowed (19.2), rushing defense (87.9) and total defense (332.9); and were third in the conference in scoring average (32.9).

The Scots placed 13 members on the all-conference team which tied the Fighting Scots’ record for the highest number selected set in 1968 and 1988.

A trio of Scots were named to the first team: senior offensive lineman Brett Gerue (Roscoe, Ill./S. Beloit), who anchored an offensive line that set the school record for points scored in a season (340); senior defensive end Brian Valentini (Elgin, Ill./Burlington Cent.), who was second on the team in sacks (8); and junior linebacker Jason Robinson (Marseilles, Ill./Seneca), who led the team in tackles (79).

Second team selections include Valentini’s bookend, junior defensive end Matt Lerner (Hartford, Wis./Union); senior defensive back Scott Stanton (Monmouth, Ill./HS), who was also named to the honorable mention team as a special teams player; senior offensive lineman Ryan Pearson (Toulon, Ill./Stark County); and senior running back Randy Terrell (St. Louis, Mo./Hazelwood East).

Rounding out the 13 All-MWC members were six honorable mention selections sophomore quarterback Rob Purlee (Mt. Carroll, Ill./HS); senior fullback Nick Martin (Peru, Ill./LaSalle-Peru); senior wide receiver Randy Williams (Hillside, Ill./Lane Tech); junior defensive lineman Tobias Dickerson (Galesburg, Ill./HS); sophomore linebacker Rob Rogers (Orion, Ill./HS); and junior defensive back Justin Oertle (Lexington, Ill./HS).

The Scots’ five game turnaround is the largest improvement since the 1986 squad posted an 8-1 mark following a 2-7 campaign the year before.
