Cowan and Schlegel Earn Player of the Week Honors
Release Date: October 8, 2001
Thanks to a pair of
2-1 overtime victories over the weekend, two Monmouth College athletes were named
Midwest Conference Men’s Soccer Players of the Week.
Monmouth College senior forward Ryan
Schlegel (St. Charles, Ill./Central) has been named Offensive Player of the Week
while senior goalkeeper Joel Cowan (Alton, IL/HS) was named Defensive Player of
the Week.
On Saturday, in a 2-1 OT win over
Beloit, Cowan turned away 13 shots while Schlegel scored the winning goal just over a
minute into the overtime period.
In Sunday's 2-1 OT triumph over Lake
Forest, Schlegel again scored the winning goal, this time just 45 seconds into overtime;
Cowan recorded nine saves.
"Joel kept us in both games with some
phenomenal saves," said coach Rue Carthew. "He's a four-year starter for us, and he's
been an outstanding senior leader for this team."
“Schlegel had a weekend to remember,”
said Carthew. “Netting both game-winning
goals has given us a big lift.”
The Scots had never beaten the Bucs
or the Foresters in team history.
