All-District V
Release Date: February 22, 2001
Two Monmouth College standouts have
received a pair of post season honors. Amber Kuhrts, a 5-foot-11 senior forward
from Toulon (Stark County), has been named to the Verizon Academic All-District V
College Division women’s basketball first team, while Jeff Stenoish, a 6-foot-3
junior guard from Peoria (Notre Dame), has been named to the Verizon Academic
All-District V College Division men’s basketball second team.
Kuhrts will be placed on the national
ballot in voting for Academic All-American status, which will be announced Mar. 15. She
is the first Monmouth College athlete to make it onto the national ballot since Todd
Porter and Juan Mitchell in 1990.
She finished the year second in
scoring for the Fighting Scots with an 11.5 average and was also the second leading
rebounder with 144. The biology major and chemistry minor is the seventh leading scorer
in Fighting Scots women’s basketball history with 796 points and has pulled down 422
rebounds in her career.
The five-time dean’s list recipient
has been a three year starter for the Scots and played in every game (90) throughout her
four year career. She was named Academic All-Midwest Conference for the 1999-2000 season
and was also a second team All-MWC basketball selection.
Scots coach Dennis Mann said, "This
is a great honor for Amber. To take the difficult classes she does and still devote time
to basketball is a testimonial to the type of individual she is. It is a great
reflection on Monmouth College to be able to produce a scholar-athlete such as Amber."
Stenoish finished the year second in
scoring for the Fighting Scots with a 13.8 average and was also the second leading
rebounder with 102. The physics major has scored 888 points during his Monmouth College
career (13.5 ppg) and pulled down 318 rebounds.
The three-time dean’s list and
two-time honor roll recipient has played in every game (66) for the Scots since his
freshman year. He was named Academic All-Midwest Conference for the 1999-2000 season and
was also a second team All-MWC basketball selection.
Scots coach Terry Glasgow said, "Jeff
exemplifies the prototype Division III student athlete. He is the kind of person we hold
up and say ‘This is what we are producing.’ We are very proud of Jeff and pleased for
him. Obviously his parents and high school coach did a wonderful job."
The Verizon Academic All-District V
team is voted on by sports information directors from the district which includes four
states and two Canadian provinces. To be eligible for the award, an athlete must meet
minimum grade point requirements, have legitimate athletic credentials and be a starter
or important reserve while reaching at least sophomore status.
