Scots have big day at Lee Calhoun track meet
April 16, 2001
The newly-surfaced track at Bobby Woll Memorial Field hosted its first big collegiate
action Saturday as Western Illinois University’s Lee Calhoun Memorial Meet was held in
Monmouth. Fighting Scots sprinter Constance Jackson found the fresh surface and
the Division I competition to her liking, as she bested her previous school record in
the 200-meter dash and also posted a season-best time in the 100-meter dash. She has
qualified automatically for the national meet in the 200 and provisionally in the 100.
Jackson won the 200 in 24.35, and she
placed second in the 100 (12.25). Although not all of the weekend’s best times in the
nation have been posted, Jackson now ranks second among all Division III sprinters in
the 200 and fifth in the 100. Her previous school record in the 200 was 24.51.
Shot putter Eric Holmes may
have the best Division III throw in the nation with his 54’6-1/2 effort Saturday, which
was good for second Saturday behind an athlete from DePaul University. His throw came
within two inches of Monmouth’s school record.
Jill Hoops also posted a
provisional qualifying mark, running the 400-meter hurdles in 1:03.36, good for third
place. She’s now ranked seventh in the nation. Melissa Jones came up a half-inch
shy of a provisional mark in the high jump, clearing 5’4.
Both of Monmouth’s pole vaulters had
big days. Aaron Walker captured first in the event by equaling his own school
record of 14’6. On the women’s side, Cheris Beaty set a school record for the
second straight week by clearing 9’6, good for fourth place.
Monmouth’s men placed sixth at the
meet, trailing Eastern Illinois University, WIU, Illinois State University, Truman State
University and DePaul, the latter by just a half-point. The Fighting Scots’ women placed
fourth, beaten by WIU, ISU and DePaul.
