Scots Dominate MWC Meet
Release Date: May 14, 2001
Fueled by first place finishes in 12
events – including four for record-setter Constance Jackson – the Monmouth
College outdoor track teams recorded a title sweep Saturday at the MWC Championships in
Grinnell, Iowa.
The title was the second in a row for
Monmouth’s women and gave the teams their eighth sweep of an MWC indoor or outdoor meet.
The last time both Monmouth teams prevailed at the league championships was the 2000
indoor meet, and this was their first outdoor sweep since 1998.
The men gained their title by 47
points, besting defending champion Carroll 195-148. The women topped Carroll 201-154.
"It was a very good overall effort,"
said MC coach Roger Haynes. "No one individual was more outstanding than anyone
else." Haynes added that a key to the margins of victory was the improvement MC runners
made on Friday’s heat times, especially the men’s sprinters.
Jackson, the women’s track MVP at the
meet, was a huge piece of the puzzle for Monmouth. Not only was she able to rise above a
nagging injury, her four titles elevated her to the all-time lead in MWC victories for a
Monmouth performer. She passed Charles Burton’s mark of 29 titles and finishes the MWC
portion of her career with 30. Jackson won the long jump (17’9-3/4), the 100-meter dash
(12.74) and the 200-meter dash (25.44) and was also a part of the winning 4x100 (a
season-best 48.40) with Jill Hoops, Philicia Moredock and Michelle
Flaar.
Of course, Jackson still has the
national meet ahead of her May 24-26, and qualifying for that meet was also on the minds
of Monmouth’s competitors. Three more accomplished the feat at Grinnell – David Hodge,
Kara Kuhrts and Moredock – and MC athletes improved upon their qualifying marks
in three other events, including the women’s 4x100.
Hodge won the triple jump with a leap
of 46’7-1/2 to better the provisional mark, and Kuhrts started a great weekend by
placing second in the high jump with a provisional leap of 5’4-1/2. MC’s 400-meter
hurdles tandem of Hoops and Moredock placed 2-3 in the event, each bettering the
provisional time in 1:03.09 and 1:03.46, respectively. The men’s 4x400 group of
Justin Bryant, Randy Williams, Ryan Moll and Chris Lacy lowered
their provisional time to 3:16.11 while winning the event.
Other event winners for Monmouth
