NCAA Division III Central Region Tournament.

Monmouth College to Host NCAA Div. III Central Regional Baseball Tournament

Release Date: May 13, 2002

Monmouth College will host the 2002 NCAA Division III Central Regional this Thursday through Saturday, May 16-18. The Midwest Conference champion Fighting Scots will host the four-team regional tournament that determines which team moves on to the NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis.

The 24-11 Scots, who received an automatic bid by winning the MWC tournament on Saturday, are seeded fourth in the double-elimination tournament and will face No. 1 Aurora University (33-4) in the second game on Thursday. The Spartans, ranked third in the nation, are the only team in the region to receive one of 11 at-large bids given nationally. No. 2 seed Carthage College (31-9) and No. 3 seed Wartburg College (29-13) will face off in the opening contest at noon.

Carthage, which won the CCIW championship Sunday, is making its 10th postseason appearance. Wartburg captured the IIAC championship and an automatic bid on Saturday.

The tournament schedule is as follows:

May 16:
Carthage vs. Wartburg, 11 a.m.
Monmouth vs. Aurora, 3 p.m.

May 17:
Loser Game 1 vs. Loser Game 2, 11 a.m.
Winner Game 1 vs. Winner Game 2, 3 p.m.

May 18:
Winner Game 3 vs. Loser Game 4, 11 a.m.
Winner Game 4 vs. Winner Game 5, 3 p.m.

May 19 (If necessary)
Winner Game 6 vs. Loser Game 7, 10 a.m.

All games will be played at Glasgow Field, U.S. Route 34 at North 11th St., Monmouth. Daily admission is $3 per person.

"It’s going to be a championship atmosphere," said MC coach Roger Sander of the upcoming regional. "It’ll be just like last Friday for the MWC tournament. Even people who aren’t big fans of baseball were stopping off at the park and staying to watch.

"I’ve said it many times that we’re so fortunate," he continued. "We’ve got maybe the finest field in Division III. A few others may look better, but no field will play any better than ours. It’s very exciting for us to have everybody come here and see our facility."
