Familiar Faces are Serving as MC
Basketball Assistants
Release Date: December 4, 2002
MONMOUTH,
Ill. — Two All-Midwest Conference point guards played their final games
for Monmouth College last February, but that doesn’t mean they completely
left the Fighting Scots basketball scene.
Both Steve Glasgow and Carrie Yerkey have returned this
season to serve as assistant coaches at Monmouth. Glasgow will assist his
father, Terry Glasgow, who is coaching his 31st team at MC, while Yerkey
will sit alongside Dennis Mann, who’s in his 11th year with the Scots.
“I’m very excited about the season,” said the younger Glasgow, who
finished his illustrious career as one of just two Monmouth players to be
voted All-MWC for four straight seasons. “Last year, my father did this
all by himself, and I saw how hard that was, so this year I really want to
be able to help him out. Even though our team is made up of 22 guys and 18
of them are first- or second-year players, we are going to look good.”
His father, who won his 425th and 426th games at Monmouth over the
weekend, is thrilled to have his son around for another year.
“He knows our system as well as any human other than myself could possibly
know the system,” said Coach Glasgow. “He’s been around the program since
he was five years old. He put off law school for a year to help his dad,
and I’m very excited to have him.
“The other day, I was called away for a bit, and Steve had to run the
practice,” Glasgow continued. “With him in charge, we don’t miss a lick. I
couldn’t have said it or done it any better myself. I think the kids that
played with Steve know how hard he competed. He believes in our system and
he believes in the Midwest Conference.”
Glasgow finished his playing career as Monmouth’s ninth all-time leading
scorer with 1,155 points, and he ranks fourth all-time in assists, steals
and free throw percentage.
Yerkey played for the Scots for two seasons after transferring from
Parkland College in Champaign, and the former Alexis High School star
averaged 9.4 points per game over her MC career, delivering 3.2 assists
per contest.
“I’m really excited to be helping out,” she said. “I love playing
basketball, and this is just one way to stay connected and help out the
girls at the same time. I think we’re going to have a good season.”
“I’m real pleased to have Carrie as an assistant this year,” said Mann.
“She’s very enthusiastic and very energetic. Even though she’s only a year
removed from playing, the players treat her with the respect of a coach.
The way the players feel about her goes a long way toward describing the
type of person she is.”
Both Monmouth teams are in action today. The women will host Rockford
College in a 7 p.m. game at Glennie Gym and the men hit the road to play
MacMurray College at Jacksonville, Ill, also at 7 p.m.
