Glasgow Earns Record Fourth Straight All-MWC Honor

For the fourth straight year, Monmouth College senior Steve Glasgow was selected to the All-Midwest Conference men’s basketball team, joining Pete Kovacs (1952-1955) as the only two Fighting Scots to receive an All-MWC honor all four years of their basketball careers.

Glasgow, who earned his second straight second team berth, was joined on the men’s squad by senior Kenny Spranger, who made the eight-man honorable mention team. The men’s Player of the Year was Nathan Hoffmann of St. Norbert, which posted a perfect 16-0 record in regular season MWC action.

On the women’s side, junior Melissa Jones and senior Carrie Yerkey were each named to the eight-player second team. Eleven players made the 2002 first team, including Player of the Year Corey Grosskopf from Carroll.

Glasgow, who scored 1,155 points in his Monmouth career to rank ninth all-time, made the honorable mention team his freshman and sophomore season. He’s ranked fourth in assists (249), fourth in steals (111) and third in double figure games (56). No other MC player in history has been in the top five in steals and assists and the top 10 in scoring. Glasgow closed his career by making his last 20 free throws to finish the year at 87.0 percent, good for the fourth-best single season effort in school history. He also pulled his career mark up to 80.9 percent, fourth-best on the all-time list.

Spranger closed the books on a very successful season by leading the conference in rebounding and ranking third in scoring and steals. He was also among the top 10 in field goal percentage, assists and blocks and was ranked 13th in free throw percentage. The Moline product finished his two-year career at Monmouth with 736 points.

Other top 10 players in the MWC for the Scots were Glasgow, who was second in free throw percentage and ninth in scoring; Greg Kloepping, who was sixth in free throw percentage; Jason Murren, who was fourth in blocked shots; Rob Purlee, who was eighth in steals, and Mike Roehm, who was eighth in blocked shots.

Jones, who will shoot for her fourth straight All-MWC honor next season, will enter the year ranked sixth in scoring (967 points), first in free throw percentage (75.5 percent) and second in blocks (67) in school history. She hit an even 80 percent of her free throws this season, the third-best mark in school history. In terms of MWC statistics, Jones ranked first in blocked shots, fourth in rebounding, fifth in scoring and free throw percentage, 12th in field goal percentage and 14th in steals. Monmouth’s other top 10 player was Yerkey, who was fifth in assists and seventh in assists-to-turnover ratio.
