Release Date: December 18, 2002
MONMOUTH,
Ill. – Monmouth College’s Matt Lerner, a 6-foot-2, 250-pound senior
defensive lineman from Hartford, Wis., (Union), has been named to
the Don Hansen’s Football Gazette All-West Region second team.
Lerner led the team in sacks (6.5) and tackles for loss (20), tied
for the team lead in fumble recoveries (2), and was third on the
team in tackles (57).
He twice had three sacks in a game
during the 2001 season on his way to 8.5 sacks, good for a tie for
fourth for sacks in a season at MC. Lerner’s 18 career sacks also
ranks fourth in Monmouth history.
“Matt
is a tremendous athlete. This is a fitting honor for a very fine
football player,” said coach Steve Bell. “He is a great example of
the kind of student-athlete we’re producing at Monmouth. We will
definitely miss his leadership and athleticism.”
The All-West Region team is selected by a panel of sports
information directors representing football playing schools in the
region.
First and second team selections will
be on the national ballot for selection to the 2002 Football Gazette
All-American Team.
A history major, Lerner is the son of David and Christine Lerner of
Hartford, Wisconsin.
