Baseball
Release Date: April 15, 2002
Monmouth College’s junior varsity baseball team swept
Illinois Central College 10-2 and 5-4 at Glasgow Field Sunday.
The doubleheader allowed coach Roger Sander to
get some work for his deep pitching staff, and freshmen Mason Abner (Normal,
IL/West) and Ryan Duffie (La Harpe, IL/HS) and sophomore Adam Carlson
(Frankfort, IL/Lincoln-Way) responded with solid outings. Abner went the seven-inning
distance in the opener, allowing just five hits, two walks and two earned runs while
striking out nine. In the nightcap, Duffie worked the first 2.2 innings without yielding
a hit. Carlson pitched the last 4.1, surrendering five hits, a walk and two earned runs.
The game ended dramatically as an ICC player was gunned down at the plate trying to
score to score the tying run.
Freshman Chad Goad (Galesburg, IL/HS) was
3-for-4 in the opener with a home run, triple and four RBI. Freshman Steve Turner
(Peoria, IL/Notre Dame) added a two hits, including a triple. In the second game, Goad
again starred with a 3-for-4 performance that included two doubles. Turner was 2-for-4
and freshman Matt Murphy (Oak Lawn, IL/HS) had a two-run single in the first
inning.
