Release Date: May 1, 2002
Monmouth
College’s Shelly Orwig (Wyoming, IL/Stark County) has been named the Midwest Conference
Softball South Division Player of the Week for the week ending April 28.
The junior pitcher played a big role in helping the
Fighting Scots secure their fourth consecutive berth in the MWC playoffs. Sunday at
Illinois College, Orwig hurled a three-hit shutout in the opener, walking two and
striking out six as the Scots won 1-0. She then entered the nightcap with Monmouth
behind 3-1, and after allowing an inherited runner to score, she shut down the Lady
Blues on three hits and a walk while striking out five. Monmouth rallied to win the game
5-4 in the home half of the seventh, giving Orwig her second victory of the day.
Orwig also allowed just one earned run in seven innings
earlier in the week against Knox, finishing the week with a 2-1 record while striking
out 18 batters and walking five. She had an ERA for the week of 0.40 in 17-1/3 innings.
