MC’s Salmon named to All-Region
baseball team
Release Date: May 28, 2003
MONMOUTH,
Ill. – Monmouth College senior hurler Beau Hellman (Ottawa,
Ill./Marquette) led the Fighting Scots pitching staff in several
categories and freshman outfielder Jason Salmon (Metamora,
Ill./Notre Dame) did his best impersonation of a Top 40s radio
station and kept the hits coming for the Fighting Scots this season.
Their efforts did not go unnoticed as Hellman was named to the
second team and Salmon received an honorable mention
selection to the Division III All-Midwest Region All-American team.
Hellman posted a team-high six wins
for the Scots while holding opponents to a .192 batting average. The
right-hander also threw nearly 60 innings and struck out 53 batters,
both team highs. His 2.11 ERA was second on the team.
Salmon, a fleet-footed
centerfielder, batting from the leadoff spot, led the Fighting Scots
in batting average (.455), hits (56), runs scored (42), doubles (9),
total bases (67), on-base percentage (.521) and stolen bases (16).
Playing
in all of Monmouth’s 34 games this spring, Salmon’s .455 batting
average ranks him second all-time at Monmouth for players with at
least 100 career at-bats. His 56 hits are a school record.
Earlier this month, the pair was
named first team All-Midwest Conference in a vote of the league’s
coaches.
