MONMOUTH,
Ill. – Monmouth College’s Melissa Jones, a 5-foot-11 senior post
player from Port Byron, Ill., (United Township), has been named to
the Verizon Academic All-District V College Division women’s
basketball team.
Named to the second team, the physical
education major became only the sixth woman in MC history to score
1,000 points. Her 1,313 points is third all-time among women
players, and is sixth among the men and women.
A three-time all conference performer, Jones
leads the team in scoring (15.7 ppg), rebounds (6.1 rpg), field goal
percentage (.518) and steals (30). She also holds school records for
single game scoring (37) and career blocks (77).
“Melissa is a tremendous athlete and a great
example of the kind of student-athlete we’re producing at Monmouth,”
said coach Dennis Mann. “She has been a great leader for our team,
both on the court and in the classroom.”
The Verizon Academic All-District V team is
voted on by sports information directors from the district, which
includes four states and two Canadian provinces. To be eligible for
the award, an athlete must meet minimum grade point requirements,
have legitimate athletic credentials and be a starter or important
reserve while reaching at least sophomore status.
The daughter of Marvin and Sandra Jones of
Port Byron, Jones is the fourth student-athlete at Monmouth to
receive Verizon academic honors in the last three years. The others
were basketball players Amber Kuhrts (First Team District V, 2001)
and Jeff Stenoish (Second Team District V, 2001) and Matt Lerner in
football (Second Team District V, 2001; Third Team District V,
2002).
