MONMOUTH, Ill. — For the fourth straight season, Monmouth
College’s Melissa Jones was named to the All-Midwest Conference
women’s basketball team. Another Fighting Scot, junior Troy Bennett,
was selected to the men’s All-MWC squad.
Jones, who previously had one first team and two second team
honors in her outstanding Monmouth career, was named to the
11-member first team. In conference action, she finished as the
league’s fourth-leading scorer (15.1 points per game) and was also
ninth in rebounding (5.8), sixth in field goal percentage (.503) and
13th in blocked shots (0.43).
When non-conference action is added in, Jones actually led the
MWC in scoring (16.7 ppg), and her 37 points against Rockford was
the most by any player in the league in a single game. Jones
finished her career at Monmouth with 1,318 points, the third-highest
total in the history of the women’s program.
“Going into the coaches’ meeting, there was no question in my
mind that she was a first-team all-conference player,” said MC coach
Dennis Mann. “She’s very deserving of that honor.”
Bennett, who received honorable mention, earned his first MWC
recognition for a season that saw him average 16.9 points per game
in the league (11th place) and 16.6 overall (10th place). In the MWC,
Bennett was also 16th in rebounding (5.4), fifth in field goal
percentage (.586) and seventh in blocked shots (0.69).
“The honor was certainly a tribute to his last half-dozen games,”
said men’s coach Terry Glasgow of a stretch that saw Bennett average
20.8 ppg. “With our 2-14 league record, it was tough for Troy to
place higher than honorable mention.”
The men’s first team consisted of Grinnell’s Steve Wood,
Lawrence’s Chris Braier, Beloit’s Marques Flowers, St. Norbert’s
Kari Hannula and Illinois College’s Garrett Ingram. Wood was named
Player of the Year and IC’s Mike Worrell earned the top coaching
honor.
Joining Jones on the first team was Player of the Year Stacy
Ritter of St. Norbert and the Coach of the Year was SNC’s Connie
Tilley. The Green Knights won both the regular season and tournament
championships.
