MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College sophomore
Zach Barr made his first appearance on the national stage Saturday
at the NCAA Division III Championships in Hanover, Ind., and the
former Roseville High School star came away with a 68th-place
finish, covering the 8K course in 26:22.1.
All-American honors were awarded to the top
35 finishers, and Barr found himself a mere 30.9 seconds away from
that level. The race was won by Josh Moen of Wartburg College, who
covered the course in 24:34.4.
“The course had a lot of rolling hills, and
there was very, very soft footing,” said MC coach Roger Haynes, who
noted that the times weren’t the same as many of the competitors had
run at regional. Still, he added, Barr “managed to beat some area
kids that he hadn’t beaten all season, which he also did at the
regional level.
“With the top 35 runners getting
All-American honors, and with 26 seniors running in front of him
this year, becoming an All-American is certainly within reach,” said
Haynes. “It was a good effort for his first try, and now he’s going
to have to decide how important it is to him. That will involve
year-round training and increasing his mileage.”
Monmouth’s top finish at a national meet
remains Dan Schisler’s 26th-place performance in 1992.
