MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College athletes
received several awards at Sunday’s Fall Sports Banquet, including
the prestigious James K. McClintock III Award.
The McClintock Award is inscribed annually
with the name of the football player who, in the opinion of his
peers, contributed the most to the team and the current season. The
recipient for the 2002 season was David Wyffels of Annawan.
He is the son of Paul and Julie Wyffels of Annawan.
Other football award winners announced were
junior quarterback Rob Purlee, offensive MVP; junior
linebacker Rob Rogers, defensive MVP; and senior defensive
end Matt Lerner, team MVP.
Senior Molly McNamara was named the
MVP for women’s golf, while junior Liz Gard won the most
improved honor. Senior setter Megan Harris was named the MVP
in volleyball.
In women’s soccer, freshman forward Amy
Horneck was the offensive MVP, senior goalkeeper Lauren
Bentrup was the defensive MVP and freshman goalkeeper Jill
Leoni earned the most improved honor. Junior goalkeeper Matt
Hoag captured both the MVP and most improved honors in men’s
soccer.
The school also recognized its All-Midwest
Conference athletes and student-athletes. Twenty-seven Fighting
Scots earned All-MWC honors for their performance on the playing
fields, while 23 fall sports participants were named to the
conference’s all-academic team.
Athletes who lettered four years in a single
sport were also recognized. They include Aaron Calder,
Frank Clark, Matt Hargleroad and Jennifer Latchford
(cross country)’ Tobias Dickerson, Lerner, Justin
Oertle, Scott Stanton and Nate Tipon (football);
McNamara (golf); Bentrup and Zach Hampson
(soccer); and Melissa Jones (volleyball).
