MONMOUTH, Ill. – Monmouth College’s
runner-up finish in the Midwest Conference football race has
resulted in 17 players being named to the all-conference team. In a
vote of MWC coaches, Monmouth produced their largest number of
all-conference performers in school history.
Senior quarterback Rob Purlee (Mt. Carroll,
Ill./HS) was named the Offensive Player of the Year and led a group
of five first-teamers. Purlee led the conference in total offense
and passing efficiency and was second in TD passes. Purlee’s
favorite target, senior wide receiver Nathan Gaskill (Monmouth,
Ill./HS), who hold numerous school receiving and return records, was
also named to the first unit along with two offensive linemen,
junior Dan Wingler (Urbana, Ill./HS) and senior Jon Newcomb
(Knoxville, Ill./HS). Rounding out the first team was senior
linebacker Rob Rogers (East Moline, Ill./Orion) who led the Scots in
interceptions (4) and was second in tackles (97).
Gaskill was also named to the second team as
a return specialist. Senior running back Oscar Scott (Chicago,
Ill./Simeon) and junior tight end T.J. Gordon (Melrose Park, Ill./Leyden)
were named to the second team offensive unit. Scott led Monmouth in
rushing with 874 yards. Four Fighting Scots filled five positions on
the defensive second team. Sophomore Justin Zigler (Tampico,
Ill./Prophetstown), who led the Scots in tackles (99), was named at
linebacker and as a defensive team specialist and sophomore
defensive back Ryan Bast (Lincoln, Ill./HS), junior defensive
lineman Andy Stumpf (Carrollton, Ill./HS) and senior punter Phil
Pullen (Monmouth, Ill./HS) also were selected. Bast paced the team
in pass breakups (8) and Stumpf was the team leader in sacks (4).
Named to the honorable mention list from
offense were senior wide receivers Tyler Snyder (Chillicothe, Ill./IVC)
and Jason Killion (Jacksonville, Ill./HS), and junior offensive
lineman Marshall Price (Taylor Ridge, Ill./Rockridge). Killion led
Monmouth in TD catches (8). Sophomore defensive lineman Tyler Dihle
(Good Hope, Ill./Northwestern) rounded out the record number of
all-conference selections for Monmouth College.
