MONMOUTH,
Ill. — In a few days, Monmouth College will be opening its new $22
million Huff Athletic Center and, in a related event, the college has also
unveiled a new athletic logo.
Adopted in August, the logo features the
word “Scots” in large red type, with the word “Fighting” in smaller
white type on a black background.
“There was a concerted college effort
because of the previous great degree of variation in things like
stationery and uniforms,” said athletic director Dr. Terry Glasgow.
“We wanted to come up with something that was dignified, that was
associated with Monmouth College and that the students, players and
coaches could have pride in.”
Glasgow added that there was an urgency this
summer, as a new logo had to be submitted to architects for the new
gymnasium floor at the Huff Athletic Center. The college hired
Converse Marketing, an award-winning design firm in Peoria, to
prepare a proposal. The new logo had to be flexible enough to be
reproducible on all uniforms, signs, programs, scoreboards, T-shirts
and letterhead and on the Web. A style manual also had to be
developed.
The firm examined all of Monmouth’s previous
logos, interviewed coaches and talked to the vice presidents. It
prepared three different initial designs. These were reviewed by
various departments and individuals, and one of the designs was
selected and reworked several times.
Additional components adopted include a
stylized capital M that can be used on helmets, caps, etc., and a
stylized version of “Monmouth College” in the Rockwell typeface. The
new graphics will be trademarked by the college and will be used on
all official athletic-related items.
