MC places 27 athletes on Academic All-MWC list

MONMOUTH, Ill. – A total of 27 student-athletes at Monmouth College have been named to the Academic All-Midwest Conference team for the fall 2004 sports season. Student-athletes who have reached at least sophomore academic status must have achieved a minimum 3.2 grade point average to be eligible for the honor.

The Fighting Scots’ women’s soccer team led the college in selections with seven team members - juniors Abby Horneck (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston), Amy Horneck (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston) and Kathleen Heinrich (Peotone, Ill./Peotone) and sophomores Audrey Bellefeuille (Highwood, Ill./Highland Park), Amanda Havens (Big Rapids, Mich./Big Rapids), Kristen Mertel (Palatine, Ill./Hoffman Estates) and Jess Myers (Warrenton, Va./Fauquier).

Monmouth’s football and cross country teams placed five members each on the honors list. Representing the football team were senior Scott DePue (Joliet, Ill./Central), juniors Steve Coutts (Ladd, Ill./Hall), Tyler Dihle (Good Hope, Ill./Northwestern) and Matt Hammer (Shannon, Ill./Eastland) and sophomore Casey Evans (Winchester, Ill./Winchester). The men’s and women’s cross country teams were represented by juniors Zach Barr (Roseville, Ill./Roseville), Anthony Welty (Dixon, Ill./Newman Central Catholic) and Erin Mann (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth) and sophomores Ashley Gaul (Swansea, Ill./Belleville East) and Joni Nelson (Little York, Ill./Yorkwood).

The women’s tennis and volleyball teams each had three athletes honored. From the tennis team, seniors Anna Beasley (Carlinville, Ill/Carlinville) and Sara Yerks (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) and junior Holly Trotter Elk Grove Village, Ill./Elk Grove) were named academic all-conference. Volleyball players named to the squad included seniors Molly Pendergrass (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) and Maria Shepard (Delavan, Ill./Delavan) and sophomore Kari Jefferson (Augusta, Ill./Southeastern).

The women’s golf and men’s soccer teams rounded out the selections with two student-athletes each. The women’s golf team was represented by junior Stefanie Fitzsimons (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora) and sophomore Kacie Parge (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora). Two juniors were named from the men’s soccer squad – David Danaher (Palos Heights, Ill.) and Justin Williams (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek).
