MONMOUTH, Ill. – Three members of
the Monmouth College women’s soccer team and their coach were
recently honored by the Midwest Conference coaches.
In a vote of the league’s coaches, Seniors Amy Horneck (Hermiston
Ore./Hermiston) and Abby Horneck (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston) were
named to the All-Midwest Conference first team and junior Kristin
Mertel (Palatine, Ill./Hoffman Estates) was a second team selection.
Fighting Scots coach Barry McNamara was named MWC Coach of the Year
by his peers.
Amy Horneck picked up her fourth All-MWC honor while setting the
school records for goals in a season (20) and career (66). She also
set the school standard for points in a season (49) and career
(163).
Abby Horneck received her second all-league selection this season
after moving from midfield to defender. She finished her career
fifth on the all-time assist list (21) and fourth in both goals (21)
and points (63).
Mertel received her first All-MWC honor as a defender. She finished
the year fourth on the team in assists and helped the team post four
straight shutouts late in the season.
McNamara, in his third season at the helm, was named Coach of the
Year after the Scots finished the year 11-6 with a 7-2 mark in
league play.
The Scots set the school record for wins (11) and advanced to the
league playoffs for the first time in school history. Defensively,
Monmouth held opponents to less than 1.5 goals per game and allowed
just over 11 shots per game while the offense averaged more than
three goals per game and nearly 25 shots per game.
