MC’s Horneck named Academic
All-American
Release Date: November 22, 2005
MONMOUTH,
Ill. – Monmouth College’s Amy Horneck (Hermiston, Ore./Hermiston)
not only has her name on numerous women’s soccer records, she now
has a national award.
Horneck was named this week to the ESPN The Magazine Academic
All-American College Division second team. The senior forward was
honored for her athletic and academic excellence.
Horneck helped lead the Fighting Scots to a record-setting season,
qualifying for the Midwest Conference season-ending tournament for
the first time in school history and finishing with a school-best
11-6-0 record.
A chemistry major, Horneck holds 10 individual records at Monmouth
including career marks for goals (66), points (163) and assists
(31). She also led the team this season in goals (20), assists (9)
and points (49).
A three-time Dean’s List honoree, three-time academic all-conference
team member, four-time all-conference selection and the 2004
conference co-Offensive Player of the Year, Horneck is the first
Fighting Scot athlete since 1990 to be named Academic All-American.
“This is a tremendous honor for Amy, and very well-deserved,” said
MC women's soccer coach Barry McNamara. “When you consider that this
hasn't been accomplished at Monmouth in 15 years, you realize what a
special student-athlete Amy is.”
The Academic All-America Teams program honors student-athletes
annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing
field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting
by the College Sports Information Directors of America, a
2,000-member organization consisting of sports public relations
professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and
Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key
reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a
scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic
standings at their current institution and be nominated by the
school’s sports information director.
Horneck is the daughter of Don and Vicki Horneck of Hermiston, Ore.
