MONMOUTH, Ill. – It’s a twin
killing of sorts for the Monmouth College women’s soccer team. Twins
Abby and Amy Horneck have been honored as the Midwest Conference
Women’s Soccer Performers of the Week for defense and offense,
respectively.
Abby, a senior sweeper, shined defensively last week, leading the
Scots’ defense to three shutouts. In one of those shutouts, she held
Lake Forest’s career scoring leader to just one shot on goal. The
Foresters had been unbeaten in league play since the middle of the
2003 season. The Scots defense allowed only nine shots on goal
during the three-game stretch.
While Abby’s play was crucial in the Scots’ stifling defense, her
sister Amy was scoring at the other end of the field. The senior
forward scored four goals and had three assists in the three games,
and in the process, became the career assist leader at Monmouth. Amy
is the league scoring leader with 16 goals.
With two regular season games left, Monmouth is on the brink of
qualifying for its first-ever appearance in the league playoffs, and
their nine wins is a school record.
The Hornecks are the daughters of Don and Vicki Horneck of
Hermiston.
