Monmouth College’s Mertel is MWC Performer of the Week

MONMOUTH, Ill. – A stellar weekend has earned Monmouth College’s Kristin Mertel (Palatine, Ill./Hoffman Estates) her first Midwest Conference Defensive Performer of the Week honor in women’s soccer this season.

Mertel, a junior defender, led the Fighting Scots defensive unit to another strong showing over the weekend. The Scots allowed just one goal in two conference wins to earn a number three seed in their first-ever appearance in the league tournament.

Four shutouts in the last six games have given Monmouth a league-best six-game winning streak.

The Fighting Scots will open the conference tournament in Grinnell, Iowa, Saturday with an 11 a.m. match against Carroll College.
