Galesburg's Stacey to continue
tennis career at Monmouth
Release Date: May 31, 2005
MONMOUTH, Ill. -- Former Galesburg
High School tennis star Brandon Stacey sees the Monmouth College
tennis team as one that is on the rise, and starting next spring he
will try to help the Fighting Scots soar to new heights. Stacey, who
played at Kalamazoo Valley Community College this year, plans to
enter Monmouth as a sophomore in the fall.
Monmouth tennis coach Chad Braun has seen the program steadily
improve after a 10-year layoff. Despite not having a senior on the
roster, the Scots were just one match from qualifying for the
Midwest Conference Championships in 2005. Braun has followed Stacey
since he was in high school and knows he is adding a very talented
player to his team.
“Brandon was the best player in this area last year and he is still
the best player in the area,” said Braun. “He is a big reason why
this program continues to be on the rise. We had the biggest
improvement in the conference last year and we are looking at making
a bigger improvement next year.”
In his senior year at Galesburg, Stacey posted a 38-8 record at
number one singles and won his sectional for the second straight
year. He won four of his six matches at the state finals.
Stacey’s doubles team at Kalamazoo Valley advanced to the
quarterfinals at the national championships after he finished second
in both doubles and singles at the regional tournament. Despite all
of his success in Michigan, Stacey, who cites Braun as the greatest
reason for coming to Monmouth, is excited to move on.
“I want to be on a winning team and be a part of building a
program,” he said.
