Welty, Scots women harriers are Academic All-Americans

Release Date: April 10, 2006

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Not only can Anthony Welty (Dixon, Ill./Newman Central Catholic) and the Monmouth College women’s cross country team beat you on the course, they can also beat you in the classroom.

Welty was recently named Academic All-American by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and the Fighting Scots women’s cross country team was selected as an Academic All-American team.

A senior business/public relations major, Welty’s GPA ranked him eighth among the academic all-American list.

The Monmouth women compiled a team GPA of 3.356 during the fall cross country season to place them in the top 75 Academic All-American teams nationwide.

“The women earning Academic All-American as a group is a great indication of the overall quality of the student-athletes in the program,” said coach Roger Haynes. “It sets an example for all future cross country teams to aspire to.

“Anthony Welty earning Academic All-American truly sets an example of how a person can excel in both the academic and athletic fields,” Haynes continued. “The requirement to place in the top 25 percent of the best regional in the country and maintain such an excellent grade point average shows his dedication to both areas of interest.”
