Welty, Scots women harriers are
Academic All-Americans

MONMOUTH, Ill. – Not only can
Anthony Welty (Dixon, Ill./Newman Central Catholic) and the Monmouth
College women’s cross country team beat you on the course, they can
also beat you in the classroom.
Welty was recently named Academic All-American by the U.S. Track &
Field and Cross Country Coaches Association and the Fighting Scots
women’s cross country team was selected as an Academic All-American
team.
A senior business/public relations major, Welty’s GPA ranked him
eighth among the academic all-American list.
The Monmouth women compiled a team GPA of 3.356 during the fall
cross country season to place them in the top 75 Academic
All-American teams nationwide.
“The women earning Academic All-American as a group is a great
indication of the overall quality of the student-athletes in the
program,” said coach Roger Haynes. “It sets an example for all
future cross country teams to aspire to.
“Anthony Welty earning Academic All-American truly sets an example
of how a person can excel in both the academic and athletic fields,”
Haynes continued. “The requirement to place in the top 25 percent of
the best regional in the country and maintain such an excellent
grade point average shows his dedication to both areas of interest.”
