Monmouth repeats MWC’s men’s
All-Sports championship
Release Date: May 24, 2006
MONMOUTH, Ill. — For the second
year in a row, the men’s teams from Monmouth College have finished
first in the Midwest Conference’s All-Sports standings and earned
the Ralph Shively Trophy, which is named after the former
commissioner of the MWC.
Not coincidentally, this is also the second straight year that
Monmouth has fielded men’s teams in all 10 varsity sports recognized
by the league.
“It’s a credit to all of our coaches’ work throughout the year,”
said athletic director Dr. Terry Glasgow, who added, “We have a very
balanced program. It’s not just one or two sports that carry us.
(The championship) is representative of what is going on at Monmouth
College. We have good student-athletes who are highly competitive.”
Monmouth scored 77.5 points to finish 8.5 points ahead of runners-up
Grinnell and Ripon. Rounding out the 10 conference schools were St.
Norbert, 61.5; Lawrence, 60.5; Carroll, 54; Beloit, 48; Knox, 42;
Illinois College, 31; and Lake Forest, 27.0.
In previous years, Monmouth has not been able to keep up in the
standings due to the absence of such sports as golf, tennis and
swimming. But golf was added back into the mix in 2000, tennis was
brought back in 2002 and swimming returned last year.
Ten points are awarded to each sport’s conference champ, and
Monmouth attained that score three times with titles in football and
indoor and outdoor track. Points descend from there, and Monmouth
got nine points apiece from its second-place cross country, golf and
baseball teams. In particular, the Scots were very strong in the
five spring sports, scoring 46 of a possible 50 points to pull away
from their challengers.
The Midwest Conference has been awarding the All-Sports title on the
men’s side since 1969. On the women’s side, the first champion was
crowned in 1979. Monmouth has not won that title yet but figures to
make a strong move now that the women also field all 10 varsity
sports.
This year, the Fighting Scots women improved three places in the
standings to take fourth with 63.5 points, just four points shy of
runner-up St. Norbert. Monmouth earned conference titles in indoor
and outdoor track and was second in volleyball.
The All-Sports title went to Grinnell with 76 points. The rest of
the scoring went St. Norbert, 67.5; Carroll, 65.5; Monmouth, 63.5;
Lawrence, 55; Ripon, 54; Lake Forest, 52.5; Illinois College, 46;
Beloit, 45.5; and Knox 18.5.
