Recruiting class for Monmouth women’s basketball is a good one

Release Date:  August 7, 2006

MONMOUTH, Ill. — The Monmouth College women’s basketball team returns a trio of post players – Ashley Yeast, Laura Jahn and Tanesha Hughes – who are all capable of scoring in double digits. However, All-Midwest Conference point guard Courtney Scherrer has graduated, so it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that perimeter players, especially those who can handle the ball, were the No. 1 item on coach Melissa Jones’ wish list for the 2006 recruiting class.

Jones got what she was looking for and more, and she feels she now has the talent to get the Fighting Scots to the MWC playoffs.
A year ago, the program made great strides, knocking off a 19-5 Lawrence team and battling several other top MWC squads before settling for a 10-13 record.

Now, says Jones, “We’re excited for the season, and there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be one of the top teams in the conference. I’m really happy with the recruiting class. We really got what we needed, and we’re going to be pretty deep.”
Jones projects that point guard recruits Lindsay Emmons (Havana) and 5-foot-10 Libby White (Galesburg) will be in the thick of the battle to replace Scherrer, with three other recruits – 5-5 Barb Payonk (Mt. Assisi), 5-5 Amanda Grady (Center Point Urbana) and 5-7 Jenna Festerling (Romeoville) – also listing point guard as their primary position.

“Lindsay shoots the three very well,” said Jones of the 5-9 All-State selection for the Ducks. “Libby comes from a great program at Galesburg, and she has been really involved with us already, attending camps and communicating.”

Three other recruits figure to make an immediate impact to the program, and they include 5-11 wing Elise Waldorf (Canton), 5-8 shooting guard Danielle Farrell (a junior transfer from Carl Sandburg College) and 6-0 post Courtney Dolezil (Gordon Tech).
“Elise and Danielle are going to bring some scoring to the guard position,” said Jones. “They both penetrate well, and I think they can open things up for our posts.” Jones likened Dolezil’s build to the solid frame of recent graduate and four-year starting center Lisa Curry.

Rounding out the recruiting class are 5-7 shooting guard Kelly Sheets (Princeville), who is the sister of last year’s midseason addition, Katie Sheets; 5-9 guard Leanne Toellen (Wheaton Academy); and 5-10 wing Laura DuMont (Parker).
