Assister act: Scherrer sets MC
career record
Release Date: February 9, 2006
MONMOUTH,
Ill. — Senior point guard Courtney Scherrer (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah)
moved into first place on the all-time Monmouth College career
assist list Wednesday night during the Fighting Scots’ 62-50 victory
at Knox College.
Entering the game, Scherrer needed one assist to tie Vanessa Treat
at 331 for the all-time lead, and she got that assist in the first
half as the Scots went up 30-22 at the break. Several minutes into
the second half, she still had only the one assist, but that changed
in a hurry. First, with Knox back within two points, Scherrer found
junior Laura Jahn with a nice dish inside. Jahn’s easy bank shot
dropped through the hoops with 12:42 remaining, giving Scherrer the
record. But the 5-foot-5 playmaker was far from finished, also
notching the assist on the Scots’ next three field goals. The final
one gave Monmouth a six-point lead, and Knox would not get closer
than five the rest of the way.
“In the second half, especially, she was great for us,” said MC
coach Melissa Jones. “She had seven of her eight assists in the
second half. She just showed what an unselfish player she is. In
many instances, she could’ve taken a jump shot, but she passed it up
for a better look inside. And that’s how you have to beat a team
like Knox when you have a height advantage like we did.”
Jones, who actually helped Scherrer gain some of those assists when
the two played together three seasons ago, added, “She’s really been
a leader for us throughout her four years. She calls out a lot of
our offensive and defensive plays, which is something she didn’t
feel comfortable doing a couple seasons ago.”
Scherrer has proven so indispensable to the Scots this year that
there have been several games when Jones never removes her from the
floor. She again played all 40 minutes vs. Knox.
Now that Scherrer has topped the career assist mark, she’ll be
looking to eclipse the single-season record in the Scots’ remaining
two games. She needs five to pass Treat’s record of 113 set in
1995-96. For the year, Scherrer is averaging 5.2 assists per game.
She’s also made 34 steals and averages 7.1 points.
