MONMOUTH, Ill. – An unbeaten
regular season in 2005 by the Monmouth College football team is
continuing to reap national rewards.
Senior wide receiver/kick returner Evan Haffner of Canton (Canton
HS) and sophomore defensive end Anthony Goranson of Poplar Grove (Belvidere
HS) have been named Pre-season All-Americans by Don Hansen’s
Football Gazette.
Haffner was named to the third team offense at receiver and selected
honorable mention as a kick returner. He set school records for
receptions (70), all-purpose yards (1,554) and pass reception TDs
(13) last fall. The senior led the Fighting Scots with 871 receiving
yards, averaging more than 79 yards per game. His 351 kick return
yards also led the team, as did his 285 yards on punt returns, his
15 total touchdowns and his 90 points.
Goranson was an honorable mention selection after a freshman year
that saw him record a team-high 11 sacks. His 58 total tackles
placed him third on the Scots’ list and he was second in tackles for
loss, totaling 19 tackles for 95 yards in lost yardage.
“This is quite an honor for Evan and Anthony to be recognized among
the nation’s elite Division III players,” said head coach Steve
Bell. “Obviously, this sets them up for high expectations for this
upcoming season. I trust they will achieve their best effort.”
The Fighting Scots open their season at Wartburg College in Waverly,
Iowa, on Sept. 2. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
