MONMOUTH, Ill. — Four Monmouth
College Fighting Scots were selected to the 2005 NCAA Division III
West All-Region Team compiled by Don Hansen’s National Weekly
Football Gazette.
The list was headlined by senior Justin Zigler, who was chosen as
the West Region Linebacker of the Year after a season that saw him
set the Fighting Scots’ single-season record for tackles (115).
Zigler had 23.5 tackles for loss,
including 5.5 sacks, and he picked off two passes, running one back
for a touchdown. The 6-foot-1, 235-pounder shattered the career
tackle mark, and his 361 stops are more than 100 higher than the
previous record.
Junior Evan Haffner had the unique honor of being named to the
first, second and third teams.
He earned his highest marks as a
kick returner, thanks to his averages of 25.1 yards on kick returns
and 12.4 yards on punt returns. He scored on punt runbacks of 81 and
55 yards.
Haffner was also named to the
second team as a wide receiver after catching 70 passes for 871
yards and 13 TDs. Finally, he was picked as the “all-purpose” player
on the third team.
He set the single-season
all-purpose yardage record at Monmouth with 1,554 yards, and he
needs 835 yards next season to become the career leader as well.
Senior Ryan Bast made the second team as a defensive back, while
senior Mitch Tanney earned honorable mention at quarterback behind
Gagliardi Trophy winner Brett Elliott of Linfield, Stagg Bowl
finalist Justin Jacobs of UW-Whitewater and Whitworth’s Joel Clark.
Bast had four interceptions, including one he returned for a TD, and
he broke up 11 passes while making 42 tackles.
Tanney finished second nationally to Elliott in pass efficiency,
completing 215 of 292 passes for 2,587 yards and 33 TDs. He set the
Division III single-season record for completion percentage and was
picked off just three times this year and just six times in his
career.
This is the 18th year for the Football Gazette’s All-American teams.
