Academic All-American honors for Monmouth’s Dante Daniels

Release Date:  December 1, 2006

Image of Dante DanielsMONMOUTH, Ill. – Monmouth College senior running back Dante Daniels (Waukegan, Ill./Gurnee-Warren) was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American College Division first team, becoming the first Fighting Scots football player to be so honored since Robb Long was recognized for his athletic and academic prowess in 1983.

Daniels rewrote the record book at Monmouth this season, becoming the school’s first 1,000-yard rusher since 1993 while racking up a school-record 1,557 yards, good for third in the nation in Division III. His 155.7 yards per game average was second among Division III running backs. Daniels’ 1,689 all-purpose yards, which ranks him sixth nationally, is also a school record, and he set the new standard for rushing with five games over 200 yards. The senior tailback twice this season set the single-game rushing record, which now stands at 247 yards, and he led the Fighting Scots in scoring (96).

The Scots finished with a 7-3 record and tied Ripon for second place in the Midwest Conference. In Daniels’ two seasons, Monmouth has compiled a 17-4 record and averaged nearly 34 points per game.

“Dante is everything we could have expected and wanted when we recruited him,” said head coach Steve Bell. “It is very gratifying to see a young man get rewarded for doing the right thing both in the classroom and on the field.

“This is a tremendous way for Dante to end his collegiate football career.”

A member of the Dean’s List and named the MWC’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2006, Daniels was also an all-conference selection in 2005. He joined graduated quarterback Mitch Tanney from 2005 as the second Fighting Scot in as many years to be named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V College Division first team when that selection was announced in early November.
