MONMOUTH, Ill. — They didn’t
produce victories, but the accomplishments of Monmouth’s Albert
Greene and Kel Bond at last week’s UNI-Dome Open were major
nonetheless.
Both posted marks that put them in the top 10 in the nation in their
respective events, and they set school records in the process. Their
efforts also earned them the Midwest Conference Performer of the
Week honor for men’s field and track events, respectively.
Bond found the 800-meter race conditions very suitable, as he and
top-flight runner David Rotich of Iowa State University broke away
from the pack. Bond couldn’t catch Rotich, who had recently run a
4:04 mile, but he did take second in 1:53.80, breaking his
two-year-old record of 1:54.43.
MC coach Roger Haynes praised the Bond-led men’s distance group.
“Our distance runners were solid across the board, from 800 to 3000
meters,” he said. “I thought our men and women both did well. Our
field events were solid for the most part. Overall, we achieved most
of the goals we set out to accomplish. There was some very good
competition at the meet, including Division III schools like Central
and Dubuque, as well as athletes from Drake, Northern Iowa and Iowa
State.”
Some of those top distance efforts included Aaron Etienne (a
personal-best 4:25.23) and Anthony Welty (4:25.33), who placed 4-5
in the mile, and Welty’s third-place 3000-meter run time of 8:44.49,
which was also a PR.
The ink had barely dried on Greene’s triple jump mark from Feb. 11
when he went three inches further en route to his second-place
finish at the UNI-Dome Open, which was held on the campus of the
University of Northern Iowa. Only a competitor from Drake topped
Greene’s new school record of 46’3-1/4.
The triple jump was very good to the Scots, as Alex Stuart
(45’6-1/2) and Chuck Lief (44’1-1/4) placed third and fourth. On the
women’s side, Amy Horneck posted what would be Monmouth’s only
victory of the day for either squad. She jumped 34’4, just off her
season best.
Two other Monmouth women had solid days in the field events.
Christina Reiner was second in the pole vault (10’8) and long jump
(16’11-1/4), while Megan McKenna recorded her best-ever pole vault,
placing third at 10’2. She also tied Reiner in the long jump.
In the 400-meter run, Tyler Rundle and Luke Reschke placed second
and fifth in 50.46 and 51.17. They combined with Bond and Dante
Daniels to place fourth in the 4x400 in 3:23.39. Bond ran a
50.4-second leg in that event.
Daniels placed fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.74), and Shannon
Turczyn took fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (9.22).
The rest of Monmouth’s top five finishes came in field events and
included third-place finishes for high jumper Tim Frank (6’2-3/4)
and shot putter Zach Wilson (48’0). Jeff Rebholz was fourth in the
shot put (47’7-1/4) and fifth in the weight throw (50’10), and Evan
Harrison took fifth in the high jump (5’10-3/4).
Next up for the Scots is another competitive meet hosted by
UW-Whitewater on Saturday. The Warhawks are one of four Division III
teams in the nation listed ahead of Monmouth’s men in the first
national track and field rankings of the season. The Fighting Scots
women are ranked 17th.
