Wilson leaves no doubt en route to hammer record

Release Date: April 6, 2006

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Forget breaking records by a quarter-inch or one one-hundredth of a second. Monmouth College’s Zach Wilson is becoming known for establishing new marks with authority.
During the indoor season, the sophomore moved to the top of the charts in the weight throw by unleashing a throw of 57’2 at the Midwest Conference Championships. At the same meet, he also had a 56’6-1/2 effort, with both throws breaking the old mark of 55’7-1/2.

At the Fighting Scots’ season-opening outdoor meet at Washington University in St. Louis last Saturday, Wilson gave the same treatment to the hammer throw record. His personal best from last season was 137’2, while the school record was 152’1. The school record is now 169’10 after Wilson threw more than 30 feet farther than he ever had.

Monmouth coach Roger Haynes revealed that there was nothing fluky about Wilson’s big day.

“He had four throws that were all right around that distance,” he said.

Wilson’s provisional-qualifying throw, which is currently ranked 12th in the nation, won the event by more than eight feet, and he also took first place in the shot put with a PR of 50’6-3/4 and placed seventh in the discus (136’3). Wilson was honored as the MWC Performer of the Week in men’s field events.

Also having a big day for the Scots were pole vaulters Peter Sprecher and Jonny Henkins. The pair finished first and third, respectively, each clearing personal-best heights. Sprecher cleared 16’0 and is ranked second nationally, while Henkins cleared 15’5-3/4.

Also winning for the men was Anthony Welty in the 10,000-meter run with a personal-best time of 32.39.99.

Those four event wins helped the Scots amass enough points to come in first place out of 15 men’s teams. They scored 114 points to top runner-up UW-Platteville by three.

“We were better than expected in most events,” said Haynes. “We looked pretty good for the first meet across the board. The men won in a competitive field despite the fact that we didn’t enter all the events.”

On the women’s side, the top performance was turned in by Megan McKenna, and she also earned an MWC Performer of the Week honor after placing second in the pole vault (10’6) and triple jump (34’7-1/2) and third in the long jump (17’2-3/4). The latter two marks were her personal bests.

McKenna accounted for 22 points as the women scored 46 to place fifth in a 14-team field.

Also placing in the top three on the day for Monmouth were Alex Stuart (168’7) and Nick DeFrancisco (165’7) in the javelin and Ashley Widdop in the 100-meter hurdles (a PR of 15.99).

Other women’s scorers included Andrea Emery and Megan Clennon in the high jump; Tanesha Hughes in the discus; Jessica Dollins in the 100-meter dash; Jacquie Ouart in the 200-meter dash; and Clennon in the javelin.

Scoring for the men were Tim Frank and Evan Harrison in the high jump; Sheridan Ray in the long jump; Albert Greene and Stuart in the triple jump; Jeff Rebholz in the shot put; Brandon Hurckes in the 110-meter hurdles; Welty and Kel Bond in the 1500-meter run; Tyler Rundle and Josh Reschke in the 400-meter dash; Dante Daniels in the 100-meter dash; and Tim Meredith in the 400-meter hurdles.

“That was a very good start for him,” said Haynes of Meredith’s first attempt at the same event in which former teammate Blake Boma won the 2005 national championship.

Haynes also praised Daniels’ performance, which included an 11.03 clocking in the 100 and a leg of 49.1 in the 4x400. In the 4x100, Daniels teamed with Brad Franks, Brad Gross and Rundle for a fifth-place finish (42.12).

The women’s 4x100 group of Dollins, Ouart, Kila Cox and Widdop was fourth in 50.50, while the 4x400 team of Ouart, Katey Vaccarello, Sara Ingersoll and Cox took fifth in 4:09.85. Ingersoll also had a PR in the 1500-meter run (5:08.03).

Other PRs came from Jen Babos (126’3) and Jessica Phillips (105’10) in the hammer throw and Erin Mann in the 5000-meter run (19:59.04).

Next up for the Scots is the very competitive Wartburg Select Meet on Saturday in Waverly, Iowa.
