MC's Henkins vaults into
All-American status
Release Date: May 26, 2006
LISLE,
Ill. -- Throughout Monmouth College's track season, sophomore pole
vaulter Jonny Henkins of Kewanee has been in the shadow of classmate
Peter Sprecher. But Henkins stepped into the light Friday at the
Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Lisle, Ill.,
earning All-American status with a fifth-place effort of 15'11-1/4.
That height actually was the
highest attained by five different competitors, the third- through
seventh-place finishers. Missed vaults broke the tie, leaving
Henkins right in the middle of the group.
Meanwhile, Sprecher cleared
15'5-1/2 to finish 10th. He had strung together 16-foot vaults at
several competitions throughout the outdoor season but was unable to
repeat the feat Friday.
The event was won by UW-LaCrosse's Matt Novak, who cleared a stadium
record 16'11.
Through two days of competition at
the meet, which is hosted by Benedictine University, Henkins is
Monmouth's lone All-American. However, six entries will compete for
All-American honors Saturday, including the 4x400 team of Dante
Daniels, Josh Reschke, Tyler Rundle and Luke Reschke, which set a
school record of 3:11.57 during the preliminary round.
