Four Monmouth College Athletes Named All-Midwest Conference

Release Date:  November 17, 2006

MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Monmouth College women’s and men’s soccer teams each placed two members on the All-Midwest Conference team by a vote of the league coaches.

The Fighting Scots women had the lone first team selection. Senior defender Kristin Mertel (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) led the Fighting Scots in assists (7) and was the second-leading scorer in goals (9) and points (25). Her 63 games played ranks her second in school history, and she was instrumental on a defensive unit that set a school record allowing just 1.30 goals per game.

Freshman forward Christa Davidson (Godfrey, Ill./Alton) was named to the second team. She led Monmouth in goals (13) and points (31).

On the men’s side, seniors Sam Beciri (Carbon Cliff, Ill./East Moline) at forward and goalkeeper Brad Hofmann (Plainfield, Ind./Plainfield) were named to the second team.

Beciri led the Scots in assists (7) and points (15). He was tied for the team lead in goals (4). His three assists against Carroll College tied the school record for assists in a game.

Hofmann completed his career at Monmouth with 413 saves, ranking him second all-time. His 143 saves in 2004 is a school record.

Mertel picked up her second all-conference honor. Davidson, Beciri and Hofmann were first-time selections.
