Monmouth College’s Mertel named
Academic All-District
Release Date: November 3, 2006
MONMOUTH,
Ill. – Kristin Mertel (Hoffman Estates, Ill./Hoffman Estates) capped
a remarkable fours years with the Monmouth College women’s soccer
team and was honored for her athletic and academic excellence with
her selection to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V
College Division second team.
Mertel picked up her second ESPN award in as many years. Over her
four years the Fighting Scots compiled a 35-25-4 record, the best
four-year stretch in the history of the program.
A senior stopper, Mertel was part of a stingy Monmouth defense that
yielded just 1.3 goals per game. The Scots allowed just over 10
shots per game and limited opponents to a record-low 21 goals.
Despite playing a defensive position, she led the team in assists
(7) and was second on the team goals (9) and points (25). A
three-time Dean’s List recipient she was also named Midwest
Conference Performer of the Week for the week of October 3.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District V team is voted on by
sports information directors from District V, which includes
Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, Wisconsin and two Canadian provinces.
Athletes must earn a minimum 3.20 cumulative GPA, have achieved at
least sophomore status at their respective school and be a starter
or key reserve in order to be nominated for the post-season honor.
Only first team all-district athletes are eligible to be placed on
the national ballot.
A biochemistry and physics major, Mertel is the daughter of Duane
and Kim Mertel of Hoffman Estates.
