MC women’s soccer welcomes 14
recruits
Release Date: August 2, 2006
MONMOUTH, Ill. — Monmouth College
women’s soccer coach Barry McNamara recently announced the members
of the Fighting Scots’ 2006 recruiting class. Thirteen incoming
freshmen and one junior college transfer will be added to nine
returning letterwinners from last year’s record-breaking team.
“We didn’t intentionally focus on one position, although we did
attract five recruits who played sweeper or center defense for their
high school teams,” said McNamara. “However, toward the end of the
recruiting process, it became very important that we added a
goalkeeper, and we think we found a couple good ones in Vanessa
Kentfield and Kayla Trammell.”
Kentfield was an all-conference center midfielder at Elgin Community
College, but she also has goalie experience from her first season at
ECC and her high school career at Larkin. Trammell was a solid
contributor for Richwoods’ strong program, earning IHSSCA
All-Sectional Honorable Mention honors her junior year.
Other recruits with postseason awards are honorable mention Iowa
all-stater Amanda Neira (Burlington), a two-time All-Area Player of
the Year; three-time All-Sectional defender Emily Caron (Romeville);
and All-Sectional Honorable Mention picks Christa Davidson (Alton)
and Whitney Ott (Alleman).
Three players – defenders Lauren Vana (Downers Grove South), Lindsay
Johnson (Burlington) and Sally Hayes (Mt. Pleasant) – made All-Area
and all-conference teams, and other all-conference picks included
Claudia Gomez (Chicago Notre Dame) and Holly White (Oswego).
The strong class also includes Jeanette Friedrich (Macomb), Tina
Rohrbach (Dunlap) and Maikenzie Stawicki (Riverdale). After
transferring from East Moline to Riverdale for her senior year,
Stawicki was forced to give up soccer but did run on two state relay
finalists for the Rams’ track team. Friedrich was the Bombers’
leading scorer as a junior and senior, while Rohrbach excelled in
the defensive half of the field for the Eagles.
“Because of the loss of eight letterwinners – including two first
team all-conference players – this recruiting class took on added
importance to us,” said McNamara, who has a record of 25-20-3 in
three seasons with the Scots. “I am extremely pleased with how it
worked out, both in terms of quality and quantity.
“We were also pleased that so many talented area recruits chose
Monmouth,” continued McNamara, who noted that more than half of the
recruits live within one hour of campus. “We are in the center of a
region that has very solid high school programs in Peoria, the Quad
Cities and eastern Iowa. We’re pleased that talented players in
those areas are looking toward Monmouth as a place to continue their
athletic careers, and we certainly hope it’s a trend that will
continue.”
