MONMOUTH, Ill. – A five-game
improvement in the Monmouth College softball team’s win-loss record
has resulted in five Fighting Scots being named to the All-Midwest
Conference team in a vote of the league’s coaches.
Sophomore outfielder Anna Coutts (Ladd, Ill./Spring Valley Hall) was
named first team and junior outfielder Drew Robinson (St. Charles,
Ill./North), freshman pitcher Sarah Christensen (Galesburg,
Ill./Galesburg), sophomore shortstop Emily Willems (Moline, Ill./Rockridge)
and sophomore third baseman Jessica Travis (Washington,
Ill./Washington) were named to the second team.
Coutts came on strong in the last half of the season to finish with
a .421 average in league games. She led the Scots in sacrifice bunts
(4) and hit .333 for the season.
Robinson was named all-conference for the second time while hitting
.408 in conference games. Her .375 season average led Monmouth, as
did her 10 stolen bases. She was second in the league in hits per
game (1.54) and her 42 hits and 31 runs scored for the season led
the Scots.
Christensen emerged as a force in the circle, earning nearly half
the Fighting Scots wins (6). She was second on the staff in ERA
(4.55), innings pitched (72.1) and strikeouts (35).
Willems also earned her second All-MWC honor. She was tied for third
in the league in runs scored (14) and was second for the Scots in
that category for the season (23). She also led the league in
doubles (7).
Travis led the Scots in home runs (4), slugging percentage (.598),
on base percentage (.461) and RBIs (28). Her 16 RBIs in league games
placed her second in that category among MWC teams.
The Fighting Scots five selections are the most since 1985. Monmouth
was in contention for the MWC tournament until its final game of the
regular season.
