Monmouth’s Haynes, Wartburg’s
Newsom win national honors

MONMOUTH, Ill. —
Roger Haynes of Monmouth College and Marcus Newsom of Wartburg
College are the Division III men’s and women’s national indoor
coaches of the year, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country
Coaches Association announced today.
The USTFCCCA selected the national coaches and athletes of the year
prior to the NCAA Division III Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and
Field Championships that began today in Terre Haute, Ind.
Winning national honors for the 2007 Division III indoor track and
field season:

Monmouth College (Men’s Coach of the Year)

Warburg College (Women’s Coach of the Year)

College (Men’s Track Athlete of the Year)

Wisconsin-Platteville (Women’s Track Athlete of the Year)

Wisconsin-Oshkosh (Men’s Field Athlete of the Year)

Alecia Watson of City
College of New York (Women’s Field Athlete of the Year).
Haynes led Monmouth to
the Midwest Conference men’s indoor title with 263 points, nearly
doubling the total of runner-up Illinois College. The Fighting Scots
advanced nine athletes to the NCAA Championships.
A 1982 graduate of Monmouth, Hayne has coached men’s track and field
at his alma mater for 24 years.
Newsom coached Wartburg to its fifth straight Iowa Intercollegiate
Athletic Association women’s indoor title, claiming 10 individual
event winners in registering the second-largest margin of victory in
IIAC history. Wartburg qualified 10 athletes, including five
freshmen, for the NCAA Championships.
Newsom’s teams have finished in the top 15 at the NCAA indoor meet
in all seven of his seasons at the helm.
Leer had the nation’s top Division III time in the mile (4 minutes,
7.01 seconds ) heading into the NCAA Championships. He is also
seeded seventh in the 5,000 (14:38.4).
A senior from Minnetonka, Minn., Leer was named the Division III
All-Academic Men’s Cross Country Athlete of the Year.
Taddy has the fastest Division III times of the season in the 800
(2:09.54) and mile (4:47.42). No other runner was within six seconds
of her mile best entering the NCAA Championships.
A senior from Two Rivers, Wisc., Taddy won the mile and placed third
in the 800 at last year’s NCAA Division III Indoor Championships.
Watson has the nation’s top Division III mark (39 feet, 5 inches) as
she prepared to defend her NCAA indoor title in the triple jump. A
senior from the Bronx, Watson also qualified for nationals in the
long jump, where she is seeded seventh with a best of 18-6.
Houle entered the NCAA Championships with the top Division III marks
in the shot put (56-8½) and 35-pound weight throw (64-11½).
The senior from Oshkosh won the weight and placed second in the shot
at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
