MONMOUTH, Ill. – Although the Monmouth College track team didn’t
sweep the Midwest Conference Performer of the Week honors this week,
four athletes were honored for outstanding performances.
Juniors Peter Sprecher (Canton, Ill./Canton), Jonny Henkins
(Kewanee, Ill./Kewanee) and Megan McKenna (Chicago,
Ill./Resurrection) were joined by freshman Clay Staley (Hanna City,
Ill./Illini Bluffs) in receiving the conference’s POW honors for
their accomplishments at last weekend’s Midwest Invitational held at
Monmouth College.
Sprecher and Henkins soared to new heights, literally. The pole
vaulting duo each cleared 16’6” in taking the top two spots at the
meet and automatically qualifying for the national championships in
March. They were named co-winners of the men’s field event POW.
McKenna was named the women’s field event POW after winning the long
jump (17’0-3/4”) and taking second in the pole vault (11’6-1/4”).
Her mark in the pole vault qualified her provisionally for the
national meet.
Staley ran the best conference times in the mile (4:30.78) and the
3000-meter run (8:55.50) while earning his first POW honor of the
indoor season.
